When renovating a home, you never know what you’re going to find. From leaking pipes to mold, and asbestos to termite damage, ask any professional renovator and they will tell you that every house is full of surprises. When Melissa Fahy busted into the walls of her home, though, she found something that even HGTV’s Chip and Joanna Gaines would have been shocked to discover.

When Melissa Fahy and her husband were renovating their old home, Melissa found an envelope sticking out of the floorboards. Without giving it a second thought, Melissa tore the package open and was in awe of what she held. It was a love letter, addressed to a soldier overseas from his loving wife. The later was dated 1945.

The letter, yellow with age, expressed such love and devotion, and it was clear that the sender longed for her husband’s safe return. So, without knowing whether or not the soldier made it home, Melissa resolved to find its rightful owner. She took to Facebook and tagged two people: Virginia and Rolf E. Chrstoffersen–the subjects of the letter.

Two hours later the unthinkable happened–Melissa received a response, from the soldier himself! He made it. The man, now 96-eyars-old, lived in California, thousands of miles away from the house in which the letter was found.

The letter couldn’t have popped up at a more important time. Virginia passed away six years prior, so this letter served as a reminder to Rolf of the love he and his wife once shared.

It was heartwarming for Rolf to see the letter that his wife had addressed to him all of those years ago. It was a reminder of the love they shared during the war and the love that they continued to share until she passed away.

Virginia’s daughter was also thrilled to have this relic from her mother and was ecstatic to be able to read these words written long before she was born. It gave her a glimpse into her mother’s past and a glimpse into her parents’ relationship.

Both the veteran and his daughter were extremely touched that Melissa took the effort to return the letter, as it meant having a piece of their wife and mother they never knew existed.

Our veterans do so much for this country, and it is heartwarming to see an act of kindness to remind one of them about the love that he shared during the time he was overseas.
