When living in a home, you expect nature to stay outside where it belongs. Sometimes, though, wild animals do find a way inside. Most commonly you can expect to find a wild animal living in your attic, basement, or the crawl space beneath your house, but what would you do if you found one living in your closet?

Tara McVicar got the surprise of her life when she was looking in the closet of her indoor/outdoor room. Unlike a regular room, an indoor/outdoor room gives homeowners easy access to the outside of their home. This makes it particularly easy for unwanted guests to find their way inside.

As she was looking in the closet she noticed a black, plastic bag on the floor. As she looked closer, she could see it was moving. Wondering what was going on, she peeked inside. Much to her shock, an opossum had taken up residence in the bag. At first she was frightened as the opossum hissed at her, but then she made an adorable discovery.

An Even Bigger Discovery

In the bag with the opossum were a bunch of baby opossums. It seems the mom had decided to move into Tara’s closet to provide a safe place for her babies away from outdoor predators. This changed the situation for Tara, as she was now determined to remove the momma opossum and her babies from her home safely.

Thinking quickly, Tara set up an old rabbit hutch to serve as a home for the family. At first reluctant, eventually the momma opossum exited her home with her babies and went to live in the rabbit hutch. Everything ended well and now Tara has some new woodland friends. When all was said and done, Tara counted eight or nine baby opossums.

While many homeowners love wildlife, having them living in your home is something else entirely. They chew on wiring and wood, leave their droppings and urine everywhere, and can even carry disease. It is important to remove wild animals living in your home promptly to prevent any damage and to stay safe.

The easiest way to remove a wild animal from your home is to hire someone to do it for you. A licensed exterminator has everything they need to make animal removal easy and safe. Most often, exterminators will use a trap to catch the animal and then remove it from the home.

Another method that an animal control expert can use to remove a wild animal from a home is bait. In addition, many exterminators will also patch and seal entry points, protecting your home from further intrusion by wild animals.

You can also take steps to keep wild animals out of your home by sealing up any entry points and removing any food sources that might attract them. Here is a video of Tara’s initially terrifying encounter with an opossum and the eventual happy ending.
