Wine fairies are appearing at people’s doorsteps with their favorite booze and treats
They're spreading a little joy during lockdown, and it's quickly going viral across the country.

The 567,943,230 days that the world has been on lockdown have been rough. But if there’s been one good outcome, it’s the love and support we’re all showing for each other.

The people are staying apart, but the communities are coming together.

Some neighbors have been busy creating social distancing ‘I Spy’ games, kids have been delivering care packages and writing notes to their elderly neighbors… it’s been really beautiful.

But some creative and generous individuals have used their time in lockdown to come up with a different kind of care package. They call themselves “Wine Faeries”, and they’re sweeping the nation.

These mysterious creatures are leaving different bottles of booze and treats on people’s door steps before ringing the bell and running off.

It’s now known as “dusting”.

Forget water faeries, earth faeries, and dark faeries… surely wine faeries take the cake.

It all started with a Facebook group: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Wine. It was founded by Cara Rindell, a wine-loving mom who wanted to put a smile on the face of her neighbors, friends, and even strangers in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Since her first group launched, it’s gained almost 80,000 members. And others have now started their own local groups following the fun-filled concept.

But it’s not a total surprise to neighbors when the faeries show up. Neighbors actively join the group and have to answer a series of questions to be accepted. Namely their location… and to confirm they’re of legal drinking age of course!

The faeries collect the addresses and favorite wine varieties from other people in the group and then prepare for their visit.

Toting magic wands, and wearing sparkly wings and tutus, the faeries take to the streets and bring care packages to some lucky wine-lovers.

Some groups even have assistant fairy dogs! As if this couldn’t be any cuter.

Recipients would hear their doorbells ring and rush to answer, but find only a gift basket at their doorstep.

No faeries in sight. This is top social distancing!

40-year-old Cara Rindell commented on the movement she’s created.

“It’s all about bringing others happiness and making new relationships. It starts off as a random act of kindness to a stranger and becomes a friendship with the neighbor you didn’t know you had.”

It started in her local area of Raleigh, North Carolina, but has now spread to ten different states. She’s hoping it will soon catch on across all 50! It’s even been picked up in some parts of Canada.

But it’s no surprise. I mean… who wouldn’t want to embrace free wine deliveries!?

It’s taken off so quickly that there’s even cool Wine Faerie merch.

Like these cool and colorful wine tumblers.

It’s spread so quickly, that some people have already put their own spin on it!

Like this woman, who’s more partial to dinosaurs than faeries.

I swear these inflatable dino costumes will literally never get old.

Some groups are exclusive to women, but Cara’s has always been open to all genders. She’s also started to open it up and diversify even further.

There’s already a beer version (the Brotherhood of the Traveling Beer), and she’s created other accessible versions for children and grandparents in the area too.

“This group started during COVID but it’s not going to stop after COVID. I think we always need to be spreading kindness and cheer.” – Cara Rindell

We couldn’t agree more.

When the pandemic is over, she wants to turn this social-distancing gift giving group into in-person social gatherings. And on a larger scale, she’s already been contacted by some cruise lines who are interested in collaborating.

Her fun, local neighborhood lockdown treat has really taken off! There are smiling faeries all over the place.
