Fabric softener isn’t just for making your clothes fluffy, soft, and great smelling. There are actually lots of ways you can use fabric softener around your home.
Here are some lesser known uses for fabric softener:
Make Your Own Dryer Sheets
Stop buying disposable dryer sheets and save money by making your own. All you have to do is pour about 1 teaspoon of softener onto a washcloth and let it dry. Then place it into the dryer with your next load.
Stop Flyaways
Mix some fabric softener and water and use it to tame your flyaways and defrizz your hair.
Remove Old Wallpaper
Pour one cap full of liquid softener into a quart of water and soak a sponge in it. Use the sponge to wipe down your wallpaper. Let the solution soak into the wallpaper for about 20 minutes before you scrape it off. You might want to score the area with a wire-bristle brush before you wipe your paper down if it is water-resistant.
DIY Febreze
Mix 1 1/2 cup of water, a tablespoon of baking soda and 1 or 2 tablespoons of fabric softener. Shake it well and spray on fabrics to freshen them up.
Window Hard Water Stains
Soak your hard water stains with fabric softener for 10 minutes. Then, wipe your windows down with a damp cloth and rinse.
Eliminate Static Shock
If you want to stop shocking yourself when you walk on your carpet you can spray your carpet with a mixture of one cup of softener and 2 1/2 quarts of water. You’ll want to spray the solution on your carpet in the evening. That should keep you from getting shocked for a few weeks.
Keep Paintbrushes From Drying Out
After washing your paintbrush out, dip your paintbrush in a solution of water along with one drop of fabric softener. Once you rinse your brush through this solution, you can wipe your brush dry and store it.
Wash Away Hairspray Gunk
Your regular window cleaner might not stand up to a hair spray stain. However, fabric softener will. Mix one part liquid fabric softener and two parts of water into a spray bottle and spritz your surface before wiping the hairspray gunk away with a cloth.
Caked On Food
Sometimes your pots, pans, and casserole dishes can get pretty funky with caked on food. Instead of scrubbing, fill it with water and put a little bit of fabric softener in. Let is sit for about an hour then easily wipe it away.
Repel Dust
Take a squirt bottle and pour in four parts of water and one part fabric softener. Pour out a little bit of the solution onto a cloth and wipe down your glass table, shower doors, and other hard surfaces. Use a clean dry cloth to wipe them down.
De-Soap a Dishwasher
If you put too much soap in your dishwasher and you have sudsy mess, you can pour some fabric softener on it to get rid of the suds.
