Gifts are a natural way of showing someone that you care about them. But even the best thought out gifts don’t always strike the right chords with our friends and loved ones. If you’ve ever been given a gift that you didn’t particularly like, then you know how the dog in this video feels.
Look, it’s a surprise
The video opens as Zeus, a husky dog notices a new addition to her owner’s home. It’s a small white doggy bed that’s intended for her. The owner calls out to the dog asking “What did you get?” The dog ignores her owner to sniff around at the bed in thought.
Zeus and another dog walk around the new bed. Curious about it. The owner suspects that he’s making sure that no one else slept on the bed, hinting that Zeus likes things that belong only to her. While the owner watches, he wonders and asks if the dog likes the new bed.
As the video goes on though, the owner gets a sense that everything isn’t quite right. Her dog is simply not responding to the bed in a way that he suspects. Her questions about Zeus’s thoughts almost sounds like he’s questioning why he doesn’t like the bed.
Then, Zeus looks at her owner and makes a decision. He walks away from the new bed and lays on a cushion nearby. The owner rubs Zeus’s head and comments that:
“Well aren’t you a little diva”.
The owner then looks to her other dog, Cayden, and asks how he feels about the bed. Without a complaint or second thought, Cayden gets a favored chewing toy and goes to stand on the bed. The owner prompts him to sit. Cayden sits claiming the bed for himself.
Zeus had been whining during this entire exchange. Expressing her disapproval loud and often. No matter what the owner says, Zeus is just not having it. The old bed is what he wants and that may not change any time soon.
The owner resigns herself to buying the gift for the wrong dog promising that they can try again later with a different bed.
Change isn’t easy
Many pet owners consider dogs some of the easiest pets to manage. But just like everyone, pets can have very different personalities. While some dogs, like Cayden, don’t seem to mind change, others are very resistant to it.
Dogs are creatures of habits and small breaks from routine, including feeding times, play time, and the design of a home’s interior, can cause anxiety. Many dogs grow accustomed to change over time, but it isn’t always a simple overnight process.
The big thing Zeus’s owner learned is that it’s not always easy to buy gifts. Especially for dogs as opinionated and stubborn as Zeus. But half the fun of gift giving is the journey for the perfect gift.
