There are so many reasons why people audition for singing contests and talent shows. Some simply dream of turning their lives around and having a better future. Others just want to express themselves and follow their passion for music.

For Paul Ieti, it was about making a change in other people’s lives.

In his audition on America’s Got Talent, he chose to perform Rihanna’s “Stay.” Upon realizing his piece, the judges were quite doubtful that it’s the best song for him.

Being a soldier, Paul has a really big and muscular body. Perhaps most of the people watching him were thinking he’d be singing something more stereotypically masculine.

Paul blew everyone away.

Despite his big physique, he actually has a really soft and soothing voice. And he’s capable of reaching the song’s high notes, too. You wouldn’t believe that such a voice would come from a big guy like him.

It’s no wonder why all judges voted “Yes” and sent him straight to the Judgement Week. At that phase, Paul performed Bless the Broken Road by the Rascal Flatts and that sent him to the Quarterfinals.

There, he performed You & I by One Direction. It earned him a spot in the Semifinals where his journey in the competition ended.

Paul started singing in church.

All his life, he has been singing. In fact, even during his 9-month deployment in Afghanistan, he would sing. He performed not just for himself but for everyone he’s with.

For him, music is his comfort zone. His voice has provided a way for him and his fellow soldiers to momentarily leave the reality of what they are going through.

Recognizing his talent, his fellow soldiers supported him all the way. The entire competition required about 34 days and his leaders and supervisors showed support for him the entire time. They made it possible for Paul to take a leave so that he can join the show.

His voice and bravery aren’t the only things that make Paul an inspiration.

Even his purpose is admirable, too. He joined the military to serve the country and to give back to the people. His purpose of being a soldier wasn’t for himself but for others.

After his journey in America’s Got Talent, however, Paul felt that there’s a much bigger world outside of the military where he can share more of his talent.

“I love the military, but with the God-given talent I have, I know there’s more out there for me to use it with and to share with the world.” -Paul shared.

After the competition, Paul showed appreciation not just for the people he has worked with but also for his family in American Samoa.
