Pit bull found ‘torn to shreds’ finds a safe place to call home

August 26th, 2020

A Momentous Rescue

Pit bulls are no stranger to polarizing opinions. Many of them are believed to be strictly bred to be aggressive. Others know that despite the stereotype and cases of aggression, they carry a heart of gold and are extremely loyal to their owners. Whatever the case may be, animal abuse is never the answer to solve their riddled behavior.

Pit bulls continue to be used for cage fighting in order to feed the underworld business that cruelly exploits them for purely financial gain. At times, we come across uplifting stories of pit bull rescues that truly deserve to be shared. That was the case for one pit bull in Florida who was lucky enough to be found alive.

A brave group of animal rescuers in South Florida rescued a pit bull that suffered terrible injuries and scrapes as a result of being used as a bait dog.

The pit bull, named Elijah, was found lingering on the edge near death in the city of Hialeah. Amy Roman, of the 100+Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida, told her story as she noticed that Elijah was, “torn to shreds” and shrouded in maggots. His skin was cut up and even had an ear that was shredded and basically ripped off.

Elijah went through intense, emergency surgery in order to recover from the physical torture he received as a bait dog. The veterinarians at Bluepearl Pet Hospital then provided the pup with 24-care to maintain his health condition and make sure he wasn’t suffering from the surgery.

Officials and investigators suspect that Elijah was used for illegal dog fighting as a bait dog. Unfortunately, so far, no arrests have been made.

Even though Elijah suffered through much trauma and was inflicted terrible pain, the dog is incredibly sweet. “The doctors are in love,” Roman said. “He’s so forgiving. He’s a fighter.”

Pictures of Elijah recovering have swept the internet. Many are showing their love and support for the recovery of the pit bull pup and are extremely joyous to see that he is working himself back to great shape. It seems he’s adapting rapidly and even familiarizing himself with how to be playful with his new toys.

Road To Recovery

You can see Elijah taking a morning stroll with his new caretakers. He looks to be moving very gingerly and happily as he begins to settle into a calmer lifestyle. The folks at 100plusabandoneddogsofevergladesflorida.org have even made Elijah branded merchandise in order to support the pup in his recovery and well-being. For dog lovers, it’s some pretty snappy gear if you ask me!

It’s important to mention that while Elijah is a sweet pit bull there are reports that show that pit bulls have bitten people at least twice as much as the next highest dog breed on the list. Not only do pit bulls have the highest bite numbers, but they also have disproportionately higher percentages of attacks compared to total number of registered dogs for each breed. Pit bulls have become one of America’s biggest public safety concerns in the past 7 years, with an increase of pit bull attacks at 830%.

Regardless of your stance, Elijah shows us just how caring and kind-hearted a pit bull can be. Despite his traumatic upbringing, he is extremely happy to be in better hands. It brings a smile to our face every time he acts excited and wags his tail to express his content.
