Adjusting to life in a wheelchair is one of the hardest things to do. Many illnesses and injuries can unexpectedly result in wheelchair use, and there’s a great deal to get used to. From the emotional side effects of being wheelchair-bound to the physical complications of learning to use the chair, there’s nothing easy about it.

One diabetic grandmother had to have her leg amputated, which meant that traveling in a wheelchair became her easiest way to get around.

Her little companion, a chihuahua, probably became used to her struggles of adjusting to her chair at home. Even the smallest of things, like the curl of a rug edge, can make it difficult to get about.

So rather than sit back and watch his owner struggle, the pup had taken to doing something truly adorable: removing the rugs from her path as she passed by in her chair.

One video captures the exact moment that the tiny dog jumps into action.

When his owner arrives in her wheelchair, he knows that he has to make life easier for her. It doesn’t matter that today she’s being pushed by somebody else. He understands how annoying it is for her chair to catch on her rug, and it won’t be happening on his watch!

As the grandmother is wheeled inside the corridor to her apartment, the pup dashes over to the first doormat in the way. He grabs it between his teeth and hurries away, depositing it in a back room out of sight.

He then returns for the second doormat along and does exactly the same thing. Grabbing the mat, he rolls this one up and runs off with it to deposit it with the other rug.

He completes his job so quickly that he manages to clear the space for his owner before she even gets there herself.

This little dog is the perfect example of the lengths our canine friends will go to to protect us. Generations of breeding have resulted in dogs being able to read humans accurately and instinctively know when they need their help.

Dogs also evolved from wolves, and pack protection is in their nature. As dogs see their human as the pack leader, it makes sense that they’d go out of their way to make sure they were safe and looked after at all times.

It’s likely that this little pup was acting instinctively to please his owner. Perhaps he’d also received praise, attention, and maybe the odd dog treat or two for his little trick. He figured out that it wasn’t only helpful, but also made people laugh and coo over him – a double bonus!

Whether this little guy was trained or not is something we’ll never know. Training a dog to protect can give way to even more incredible behaviors.

Guide dogs, for instance, are smart and clever enough to be able to lead a person who is fully dependant on them and help them get on with their day to day lives. Yes, you could train a dog to collect your post or even bring you a beer, but guide dogs are on another level of impressive.

There’s no denying that the pup in this video has a deep respect for his wheelchair-bound owner. You can watch him removing the rugs from her path in the video above.
