Cosmo is a lovably Saint Bernard who was born to a breeder in Nebraska. Even though Cosmo was sweet and healthy, the breeder decided to surrender Cosmo to the Hearts United for Animals shelter.

Cosmo was clearly confused about being in the shelter, but he was still friendly to the staff.

Jayne arrived in Nebraska and drove over to meet Cosmo. She was nervous that she and Cosmo wouldn’t get along, but it turned out she had nothing to worry about.

She and Cosmo bonded instantly!

“I don’t know if Cosmo has any understanding of what’s happening, but I think he understands there’s a human here who wants to give him some love and he’s pretty happy about it,” Jayne said.

The next morning, Jayne and Cosmo began their drive back to Upstate New York. Everyone at the shelter was sad to say goodbye to Cosmo, but they were happy he was going to a good home.

Cosmo was nervous about getting in the car at first, but once he figured out how to climb in, he calmed down.

Everything went well during the long drive from Nebraska to New York—Cosmo spent most of his time resting in the back.

Finally, Cosmo and Jayne arrived at Jayne’s house.

Jayne introduced Cosmo to her two other dogs, Poppy and Grendel, and everyone got along. Then, Cosmo took his first steps into his first-ever house.

Jayne let Cosmo wander around his new house at his own pace. The pup slowly wandered around the living room, sniffing all the armchairs. He also stopped to say hello to Jayne’s giant rabbit!

“It’s nice to see him on a big space, see him spread out and put his belly on a cool floor, and just know he’s finally staying in a space, a place where can feel happy and comfortable,” Jayne said.

As the days and then weeks went by, Cosmo got more and more comfortable in his new home. He decided that the couch was his favorite place to take a nap, and he also enjoyed sampling his family’s ‘people food.’

He and his sister Poppy also became best friends.

Cosmo is doing great with Jayne and her family.

The Saint Bernard is surrounded by people and animals who love him, and that love has helped him come out of his shell.

“Animals just understand life a little bit better than people sometimes. It’s like they know what’s important, and if they have love and food and a roof over their heads…that’s all that really matters,” Jayne said.
