If you ask a random person what their favorite sea creature is, most of the time, the answer is the same: a dolphin! Probably because dolphins look adorable, are extremely graceful in the water, and act friendly to humans.

Almost 40 marine dolphin species swim the world’s oceans and rivers, and the largest dolphin, the orca, sometimes grows more than 30 feet. One rare dolphin species is the Amazon river dolphin, or pink river dolphin, which lives in freshwater.

And, according to a story by Healthy Food House, the species is listed as “endangered to vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. There are only tens of thousands of these river dolphins left in existence.

One rare dolphin, nicknamed Pinky, was first seen about 12 years ago by Captain Erik Rue in the Calcasieu River in Louisiana. While Pinky isn’t an Amazon river dolphin, some suspect her pink color is the result of a rare genetic mutation. Pink river dolphins, or botos, are born gray and then become pinker as they get older.

“I just happened to see a little pod of dolphins, and I noticed one that was a little lighter. It was absolutely stunningly pink,” Rue told The Telegraph. “I had never seen anything like it. It’s the same color throughout the whole body and it looks like it just came out of a paint booth.”

Recently, reports came in that Pinky gave birth to a pink calf, and the two were seen swimming in tandem. The pair were captured on video jumping close to a boat in the Calcasieu Ship Channel.

Thomas Adams posted on his Facebook page a video of the two pink dolphins in the Channel, which shows the dolphins jumping in and out of the water.

“I have heard that there were two pink dolphins. Well, there definitely is!! Calcasieu Ship Channel,” his Facebook post says.

One woman named Bridget Boudreaux also shared a video of the cute pair. “It was amazing to see. Like I said, we saw two but I couldn’t get both on video at the time. I was astonished,” she told KATC.

The sunlight or other environmental factors don’t affect Pinky. Although, there are reports that she stays below the surface more than her other pod members.
