Trying to capture the magic of summer, but donโt have any fireflies around? Weโve got you covered with this essential summer DIY craft.
Whether youโre active on Pinterest or not, youโve likely seen the viral DIY craft known as โgalaxy jarsโ or more commonly โfairies in the jarโ. These jars glow in the dark and are meant to look like swirling galaxies of color, or little fairies floating around. Thanks to this super easy step-by-step DIY, created by The Gold Jellybean, youโll be able to make your very own glow jars.
Before you get started, hereโs a list of all the materials youโll need:
- Mason jars
- Glow sticks
- Gloves
- Scissors
- Mesh netting or tulle
First, take your netting or tule and loosely place it inside of your mason jar.
You want it to take up the whole space of jar and not be crammed down into the bottom. Itโs recommended to cut the tulle or netting to be slightly larger than your jar so it fills it up to the top, and then some.
Next, get those gloves on, and start cutting open your glow sticks above your jar.
During this part, you might want to wear some goggles to protect your eyes, and gloves are an absolute must. Be careful while cutting open your glow sticks as the center is actually a glass tube. Just let the tip and any shards of glass land right in your mason jar โ donโt worry about picking the pieces out since you wonโt be able to see them at the end.
Start decorating the inside of your mason jar with the glow stick fluid.
This part may take a while because the glow stick fluid is thick and doesnโt easily come out of its tubing. Dab the stick around the sides of glass and against your netting to fully distribute your glow stick. Youโll have to repeat this step with several glow sticks to get the color and vibrancy you want. Try adding various colors to brighten up your jar!
Once you have your mason jar full of glow stick fluid, put the cap back on and give it a good shake.
Make sure to use plenty of glow stick fluid so it will show up completely. Once youโre satisfied, shake the jar really good and youโre all set. Over time, the fluid might begin to collect at the bottom of jar โ donโt be afraid to shake your jar again if you need to.
Time to take them outside!
Once itโs dark, take your amazing glow jars outside and watch them light up! The tulle and netting gives the effect of floating fairies or intricate galaxies. Be sure to take pictures and show off your cool summer crafts.
