You may have heard that animals can form strong bonds with one another, but you might not believe how deep these connections actually are. When horses care deeply for one another, they are capable of doing miraculous things. One horse even saved his mate’s life! His owners simply could not believe their eyes.
Donald and Jane are farmers who live in the U.K. They happily provide a home to 23 shire horses, among other animals. The two are close to each of their horses and care for them a great deal. When one became terribly ill, this couple didn’t know what to do.
One of their horses, Beatrice, suddenly collapsed in her stable one day. She was suffering from severe abdominal pain. The horse was unable to get up, and she was in desperate need of help.
With each passing minute, Donald and Jane grew more and more worried. If Beatrice stayed down like this, she surely would not survive. With every moment her chances of dying from organ failure increased.
The farmers dedicated six hours to trying to pull Beatrice to her feet. They built a contraption of pulleys and straps, but they could not lift her – she was much too heavy, even for their best efforts.
The time came when the two realized that there was nothing left that they could do for Beatrice. They would have to put her down. Reluctantly, they prepared for this dreadful task. Meanwhile, the horse’s blood pressure and heart rate continued to rise.
It was only twenty minutes before the farmers planned to put Beatrice down when a miracle happened. Jane remembered that another horse, Beau, needed to be let out of his stall. This realization ended up saving Beatrice’s life.
The horse ran to comfort his mate. He immediately began to bite her ear. Beau had to hang his neck over the wall separating Beatrice and himself, but he was determined to see her recover.
Beau pulled up the horse’s head with his teeth. Eventually, he was able to prod Beatrice into getting up.
Donald and Jane were astounded. “We are used to seeing extraordinary interactions between the horses,” Jane explained to The Telegraph, “but we have never witnessed a horse saving another’s life.”
This was an incredible moment indeed. Beatrice was ultimately able to make a full recovery, and she is now as healthy as ever.
The powerful bond between these two horses reveals that there is more to these majestic creatures than meets the eye.
