When you are sick, you want your loved ones at your side. If someone is on their death bed, they will want their family to be with them in their last moments – their entire family. That means that if they have a pet, that animal should be by their human’s side in his or her last hours. This family knew the importance of having all of their members present when a loved one became terminally ill.

David King was a husband, father, and grandfather who lived in Missouri. When he found out he had cancer, he did everything he could to rid his body of the disease. David struggled for a couple of years to regain his health, but suddenly the situation took a turn for the worse.

One day David’s health sharply declined. His granddaughter, Ellie Miguel, described the cancer to Yahoo Lifestyle as “[taking] over his whole body.” The 17-year-old girl was devastated that her grandfather was losing his battle with the illness.

Once David realized what was going on, he was rushed to the hospital. He was admitted into a room, where he faced the harsh reality that he might never be able to see his beloved dog again. The old man remained under professional care for about a week – the whole time missing his pet terribly. David had taken a tiny pup named Little Fee into his family a few years before, and he loved this new member with all of his heart. He could not bear to think about never seeing his dog again.

“My grandma brought pictures of the dog to hang up,” Ellie explained. This cheered David up a little, but it could not possibly compare with seeing his pup in person one last time.

Ellie’s grandmother, Cindy, knew how much the little Yorkie mix meant to her husband, so she decided to take matters into her own hands. If David was going to be stuck in the hospital, she would have to bring the dog to him.

Cindy talked to the nurses about her plan. To her relief, they were on her side. The hospital staff was going to help Cindy bring the final member of David’s family into his room.

“The nurses always heard my grandma talking about Little Fee. So they encouraged her and helped her get the dog in. They had my aunt carry the dog in a really big purse,” Ellie recalled as she recapped the event.

Ellie – as well as the rest of her family – was amazed at the strength of the bond between the man and his pup. “For the first time that day, he moved his arm in attempts to pet his Lil Fee.” She added, “It was a moment I’ll never forget.”

Although David died a few days later, he was glad to have been able to spend some time with his dear dog.

This story reminds us that what truly matters is spending time with the ones we love.
