Dogs are pretty smart creatures. They tend to have a pretty good grasp on whether or not someone is good or bad, they have heightened sense (smell and hearing, in particular), and they experience lots of different emotions.
But this one dog had a bit of a hard time cracking the code one day back in April 2017.
This man, who the dog knew, was in the hospital for five weeks. During that time the man lost a lot of weight — about 50 pounds to be specific. When the man and the dog finally reunited, the dog could not recognize the man due to the extreme weight loss.
Video of the two reuniting was captured and in it, you can see that the dog is very confused. He runs back and forth, trying to figure out what exactly is going on. He looks like he is wondering who this stranger is, even though he isn’t a stranger!
“He don’t know him. He’s scared of ya,” one person says in the video.
But this is where the dog’s smarts come in. He starts to feel slightly more comfortable and that is when he slowly approaches the man. It’s when he can smell him, that he realizes exactly who the man is.
The man looked so different because of the severe weight loss, so the pup had to figure out who he was purely based off of his scent.
“He’s like, ‘Where have you been daddy?'” The dog’s mother says. “‘Where have you been?'”
The dog’s attitude and physical behavior totally switches once he realizes exactly who the strange man is. He went from confused to excited in a matter of seconds and his body language does a complete 360.
As soon as he realizes who the mystery man is, he isn’t even able to hold himself back. Even though he is a bigger dog, he still manages to jump into the man’s arms. He squirms with pure excitement and looks so beyond ecstatic, it is an extremely heartwarming moment to witness.
The man tries to contain him but the dog is just far too happy. He continues to jump around and stay as close as possible to the man. We’re going to go ahead and assume that the adorable pup probably didn’t leave the man’s side for the rest of the day!
A clip of the two reuniting was shared on Youtube via The Dodo, where it then went viral. The video reached nearly 6 million views because naturally, the world just couldn’t get enough of how cute these two were together.
It is also funny that all it took for the dog to switch gears was a sniff. When he was looking at the man, he was a bit hesitant. But then after taking just one whiff of his clothing, he was jumping for joy! He basically turned into a different dog.
It’s hard to believe that his sense of smell is that strong, but it’s true. He was so excited to see his papa. It is such a pure moment to watch, there is no way you won’t feel a little tug at your heartstrings.
