This, hands down, is my favorite cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” to date.

Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is the ultimate 90s anthem. Most people love it, some dislike it, but you can’t deny that everyone has heard it. A chart-topping from their best-selling album Nevermind, the signature single became a strong symbol of one of the most epic decades yet. Arguably the best decade to grow up in, the 90s was an impactful time that welcomed a smorgasbord of genres in the music industry, fashion that danced from chic to crazy, and films that influenced today’s teen movies and overall aesthetic with open arms. Without shunning past decades, the 90s birthed so many iconic musicians, models, and actors – all of whom are very much talked about and looked up to to this day.

Proving that 90s culture is not one to simply be brushed off and forgotten, today’s young musicians and even the older generation continually turn to the decade’s music for comfort and inspiration. This young lady is the perfect example. Ace violinist Karolina Protsenko is known for her incredible covers and overall charm. The eleven-year-old shares her music not just on social media but in the streets as well. Known for street performances, Protsenko hails from a family of talented musicians which explains why playing music together (regardless of the venue) comes easily to all of them. Just recently, she performed “River Flows in You” with her mom.

Now, she’s graced everyone with another jaw-dropping performance, this time with her father. Eclectic taste in music is always an admirable quality to have, and its safe to say this family has it. When you hear “Smells Like Teen Spirit” cover, you think loud, energetic, angsty, not soft, mellow, dreamy. Karolina and her father were able to turn the strong feel of the track and transform it into a soothing instrumental that could ease both babies and grownups alike.

The soft and mellow introduction had onlookers watching curiously, wondering what the duo had in store for them and half guessing what the song was. The calming melody produced by the combined notes from the guitar and the violin definitely served as a welcome break from the business of the streets and the crowd bustling about. The beautiful violinist, looking calm and happy as she played performed so beautifully that it gave the delighted audience more reasons to pause and watch. The father backed her up on his guitar, occasionally glancing at her for cues, out of pride, and simply to admire the talent his daughter willingly shared with everybody.

It’s not everyday a winning performance surprises you as you walk around the city and go about your day. If only talented musicians could always be there to grace us with catchy tunes and unlikely cover songs as we turn corners and make our way around our hometowns.
