The world’s first Ebola vaccine has finally been approved! This is a game-changer that could potentially save millions

The Ervebo vaccine was developed by the pharmaceutical company, Merck. It was approved by the European Commission first, shortly after, the World Health Alliance approved the vaccine making it the first of it’s kind. This ground-breaking discovery is the first of its kind that can treat adults that are 18 and over and are at risk of getting the Ebola virus.

The new vaccine has already been used to treat Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and other neighboring countries. Ervebo is being used as a “compassionate use” vaccine so that high-risk people are a priority and can be treated.

More than 250,000 people have already been vaccinated in the DRC, Uganda, Guinea, Rwanda, Uganda, and South Sudan

In clinical trials, Everbo has been proven to protect people against Ebola after a single-dose administration.

“This is a vaccine with huge potential. It has already been used to protect more than 250,000 people in the DRC and could well make major Ebola outbreaks a thing of the past.” Said Dr. Seth Berkely, CEO of Gavi the Vaccine Alliance.

Ervebo is funded by the Gavi Vaccine Alliance, an organization dedicated to helping low-income countries

The Gavi Vaccine Alliance is a health organization that’s based in Geneva, they fund and distribute vaccines in countries where poverty is widespread. Back in 2015, the GVA announced that they would only buy an Ebola vaccine to distribute if it was approved by one of the major health groups.

Now that the European Commission and The World Health Alliance have approved the Ebola vaccine, the Gavi Vaccine Alliance is producing stockpiles of the Everbo and distributing it to low-income countries! This could truly be the end of Ebola outbreaks.

“That’s why this is such an important milestone, paving the way for a Gavi-supported global Ebola vaccine stockpile. It’s also important to credit the unprecedented global effort from African countries that helped generate the evidence as well as Merck, WHO, donor governments, partners and regulatory agencies in making this authorization happen.” Said Kenneth C. Frazier, CEO of Merck. Frazier as said the vaccine was “a historic milestone and a testament to the power of science, innovation and public-private partnership.”
