2020 has certainly been a strange and dramatic year across the world. But this story is a reminder that sometimes, small accidents lead to amusing situations that are sure to make you smile. In this case, a small town in Northern Switzerland was treated to an unusual weather pattern caused by a simple factory defect. But don’t worry, it’s not nearly as bitter as it sounds.

Imagine waking up to tasty surprise

Not even two weeks ago, residents of the small town of Olten in northern Switzerland woke up to a strange and fun treat. That Friday morning, residents who were out enjoying a morning jog or were on their way to work were witness to a strange snowfall. But unlike the snow you might be thinking of, this snow was full of chocolatey bits of cocoa powder.

Was this a Hershey’s miracle in August? The answer wasn’t quite so magical, but was certainly still incredible.

Little mistakes turn into magical memories

A nearby Lindt chocolate factory had a malfunction in their ventilation systems. Apparently, the factory had a section where “cocoa nibs” were roasted that required constant ventilation to keep the room cool.

But due to a mistake in the ventilation systems, tiny flakes of cocoa powder were scooped up and blasted out into the air.

Once the powder was in the air, a seasonably strong wind carried the cocoa powder away from the factory and gave a light dusting over many parts of the unsuspecting town.

From soil to treetops

Homes, trees, and private property were all given a nice thin dusting of cocoa powder. Some residents even found that their cars were covered completely in chocolate from end to end. The company was quick to offer to pay for any cleanup costs out of concern for upsetting the townsfolk.

The town’s response wasn’t nearly what Lindt suspected

But instead of being met with angry letters or shouts and protests, the town of Olten was amused. Many residents were happy that Lindt was offering to clean up their mess and were more concerned with whether the chocolate would cause any damage to their homes or families.

In a great show of community care, the factory owners acted fast…

The town’s concerns were answered by a statement that the factory owners released to the public. They explained the cause of the unexpected snowfall and promised that the powder was not dangerous to humans or the environment. Residents appreciated the factory for their fast and thorough response to what turned out to be a silly situation.

But what happened to the town?

There’s no reports about whether or not the unexpected snowfall caused any issues for Olten. But since it happened on a Friday night, you can bet that the incident was the talk of the town all weekend long.

We just wonder how many children stood out on their lawns trying to catch as much chocolatey bits as they could.

The company rushes to make sure it doesn’t happen again

The company acted quick to correct the issue and resumed production shortly after. So a repeat incident isn’t likely to come anytime soon. But for one morning in Switzerland, the world was just a little bit sweeter.
