One of the easiest ways to lose yourself on the internet is to visit the Subreddit, “Am I The Asshole?” (or “AITA” for short).
This forum is described as “a catharsis for the frustrated moral philosopher in all of us, and a place to finally find out if you were wrong in an argument that’s been bothering you”.
As you can imagine, there’s some pretty controversial stuff on there. The concept is simple: strangers on the internet land themselves in all sorts of petty scenarios and vent about it online. You can spend hours scrolling through one ridiculous story after another, before ultimately deciding whether the writer is, in fact, the asshole.
One of the most ridiculous posts so far features a boyfriend, a girlfriend, a cheating accusation, and a dying ex.
Need a better clue about what this is about? The title of the post reads: “AITA for kissing my ex-girlfriend before her parents pulled her off life support?”
It’s a story so bizarre that you’re probably wondering whether it can even be true.
According to the anonymous poster, author, this really did happen.
Explaining his story, he began:
“About a year ago, my ex-girlfriend (I’ll call Anna) was involved in a terrible car accident. She received over 20 injuries (lacerated liver, broken ribs, punctured lung, bruised lung, left foot torn off, just to name a few). She had to be flown to the city to receive treatment. I was devastated to hear her go through this. Despite all the efforts, she was kept on a ventilator (per her parents wishes) and never woke up.”
The author continued that he spent months at Anna’s bedside, until her parents pulled him aside and kindly explained that Anna would want to see him move on.
It wasn’t an easy thing to do, but after having therapy for several months, he was ready.
Eventually, the author met a new girl, called Katie.
He thought he’d found the perfect partner – and even noticed that she shared certain traits with his ex.
Things were going well in the relationship until Anna’s parents made the decision to take her off life support.
The author explained:
“Katie knew about Anna and it was no surprise to her I wanted to be there when she was taken off life support. When I got there, I kissed Anna’s forehead, ran my hands through her hair, and told her I loved her. After the the doctors removed her tube, it was extremely emotional for all the family and me. I kissed her again (on her lips, and just whispered again “I love you).”
He added that at Anna’s funeral, which Katie attended, he gave Anna a eulogy and told Anna again that he loved her.
It was these three words, spoken at the funeral and at Anna’s bedside, that were a big problem for Katie.
The author wrote:
“After the funeral, Katie was angry with me. She asked what I mean’t [sic] when I said “I love you, Anna.” Then I told her about the kiss because I felt guilty. Now, Katie is now super pissed at me. She is staying with her parents and said I cheated on her. This was not my intention at all though, I just wanted Anna to know (if she was even conscious) that I loved her, and would see her again. The kiss was not ‘romantic’ or ‘sexual’, it was just a final goodbye, I wanted more than to just touch her hand once last time”
Unsurprisingly, the post fuelled a huge debate in the comments.
Some people insisted that Katie was at fault for being jealous of the author’s seriously ill ex. But some people saw it from Katie’s side, pointing out that she was young and probably found it hard to hear that her boyfriend still loved another girl, regardless of the situation.
Others were adamant that the story was fake.
