Vinegar has been an important staple in mankind’s cooking for thousands of years—from preserving food to keeping Roman legionaries free of infection or livening up a summer salad of baby lettuce and tomato. But among this acidic elixir’s many uses, one concoction in particular can leave you feeling refreshed, boost energy, and make your immune system stronger over time: apple cider vinegar and honey.

We mentioned that an apple cider vinegar and honey cleanse can leave you feeling refreshed and energized, but why are its colon-cleansing powers important? Well, your colon does far more than process waste; an article from Scientific American puts it this way—your gut is also your “second brain.”

This second brain is actually a system of neurons embedded in the walls of your gut. These neurons help our bodies break down and process food. However, some scientists believe they may affect our bodies in a number of other ways.

“A big part of our emotions are probably influenced by the nerves in our gut,” Emeran Mayer, director of the Gail and Gerald Oppenheimer Center for Neurobiology of Stress and Resilience Ingestive Behavior and Obesity Program at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, said. In fact, scientists have discovered that 90 percent of the body’s primary visceral nerve, the vagus, carries information from the gut to the brain and not the other way around.

Simply put, there is quite a bit of evidence pointing to the fact that a simple cleanse with apple cider vinegar may have a tremendous effect on your brain as well as your digestion.

While store-bought cleanses may seem more convenient, making your own ensures your body is getting the proper nutrients and vitamins. This consideration is part of why it’s so important to use organic, unfiltered honey and apple cider vinegar for your cleanse.

Most honey you will find in stores has been stripped of its vitamins and cut with high fructose corn syrup, limiting its healthy properties. According to organics.org, 76 percent of honey available in U.S. stores has been ultrafiltered, leaving the honey devoid of proteins, amino acids, and natural bee pollen. Chinese medicine has long used this pollen to improve vitality and energy as well as helping control weight.

Apple cider vinegar has a number properties that can help regulate blood sugar levels, though it contains little to nothing in the way of vitamins. As some studies have shown, it may also lower cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease. Unfiltered apple cider vinegar also contains strands of the “mother,” a concentrated mass of proteins, enzymes, and friendly bacteria some believe also holds medicinal properties. The acetic acid that makes up most vinegar is also listed on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines for its antibacterial qualities.

This cleanse will also help with weight management by helping you feel full, making it especially effective as a beverage at breakfast.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey Recipes

The standard method of preparing this cleanse starts with eight ounces of boiled water and two tablespoons of unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Then simply stir in a full tablespoon of raw honey and drink as part of your morning routine.

However, more spices or flavorings can be included for both taste and their medicinal benefits. Two tablespoons of lemon will help add an alkaline element to your cleanse, which will help balance pH levels in the body as well as provide a dose of vitamin C.

Other ingredients, such as a dash of cayenne pepper or a teaspoon of ginger, can also aid in digestion. The base honey and vinegar mixture can be mixed into a number of different natural beverages, such as cranberry juice or green tea, for a variety of effects and flavors.

While an apple cider vinegar and honey elixir may not cure all your ills, it is certainly a safe, healthy substitute for other detoxes or cleanses. The traditional method of colon cleansing involves overconsumption of water, which can have uncomfortable or dangerous side effects, or requires the use of an enema bag. This alternative is a much more pleasant way to start your day.
