Friendship is important, without connection to other beings, life would be sad and lonely. This blind bison was roaming through life, guarded and alone. Understandably, her disability made it hard to trust other animals. Then, along came the Jersey calf who broke down her barriers and got straight to her heart!
These two are now inseparable and it’s absolutely adorable.
Helen is a blind bison who didn’t have a single friend. Until Oliver, the Jersey calf cracked her shell and became her bestie
Helen and Oliver live at the Light House Farm Sanctuary in Scio, Oregon. The sanctuary is home to over 200 farm animals that have suffered from neglect, like pigs, cows goats horses chicken and sheep. For years, Helen roamed around by herself, the anguish she felt was apparent.
One day Oliver, the baby cow, ran up and started playing with Helen. Helen didn’t know what to think about the calf at first but slowly began to trust him.
Before long, Helen became almost like a nanny to Oliver. The two spend loads of time together and the bond is obvious
Betsy, Oliver’s mother, has no issue with his newfound friend. She drops his off to daycare with the blind bison every day and ever lets them groom each other which is an amazing opportunity for Helen!
“I catch them grooming each other which is amazing because I don’t think Helen has ever had that opportunity to express that motherly instinct before.”
Oliver has morphed into a baby buffalo, picking up Helen’s mannerisms and even growing fur to match hers
The staff at the Light House Sanctuary are thrilled to see the inseparable pair. Oliver has taken after his new best friend, even the color of his new hair matches Helens!
“He’s actually turned into a baby buffalo, The change in her demeanor is incredible, her joy is palpable.” Gwen Jakubison told USA Today.
The powerful friendship has changed Helen’s life, she’s even started befriending other animals on the sanctuary
Helen’s friendship with Oliver has helped her break out of her tough exterior shell, which may be the best gift resulting from the friendship. No longer roaming alone, the difference in Helen is Palpable.
The Light House Sanctuary has a mission to “help shine a light on the realities of animal agriculture and lead the way to a more compassionate world.” They’re doing just that!
The Light House Sanctuary focuses on facilitating great relationships between the people and the animals they care for
“At Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary we believe that every individual has the right to freedom. Freedom from pain, freedom from fear, and freedom from oppression. We provide those with the most heartbreaking stories hope and the promise of the freedom to be themselves. A promise of companionship, of love, and of care.” Light House Farm Sanctuary wrote.
