19-year-old Rosie O’Sullivan was a ball of nerves before her audition on Britain’s Got Talent. Not only was it a huge opportunity to be a contestant on the program, but also because she lacked confidence in herself.
A lot of people know what it’s like to have a difficult childhood. For Rosie, she experienced low self-esteem because of her size.
Rosie’s originally from Birmingham, England, and has been singing since she was a kid. However, her appearance always put doubt in her mind – making Rosie question whether she could do something as bold as going on BGT.
She explained:
“I’ve always been a big girl so I’ve always been a bit scared of what people thought of me.”
But Rosie decided to take the courageous step of auditioning on the reality TV show, in the hopes of proving to the world that she had talent.
Taking the stage in front of a large audience would make a lot of people shake like a leaf. Rosie too couldn’t control the butterflies in her stomach knowing she would be performing in front of the crowd, judges, and all the viewers at home.
But to Rosie, it was worth it to try. If she could just impress the judges it would be both a dream come true and lift her confidence.
The teen introduced herself to everyone while standing in the spotlight. Finally, the music began, and it was time to hear her sing.
That’s when Rosie opened her mouth and unleashed a voice that shook the room.
Performing a rendition of “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World” by James Brown, Rosie had the crowd cheering within the first few moments. Even Simon, who can be a little critical at times, raised his eyebrows out of shock.
Rosie’s voice boomed through the auditorium singing the 60’s classic. It’s one that’s been covered by many other famous artists including Tom Jones, Celine Dion, and Christina Aguilera.
She sang the lyrics,
“This is a man’s, man’s, man’s world – but it’d be nothing, without a woman or a girl.”
Rosie’s audition was so powerful that the crowd and judges jumped to their feet to give her a standing ovation at the end. In an interview years later, she explained how that moment was one that changed her life.
She told Pop-Culturalist:
“Britain’s Got Talent taught me many things. The most beneficial thing I took from the show was when I stood on that stage and saw people rise to their feet in support and applause. I knew from that moment that this is where I belong and what I should be doing.”
When it came time for the judges to interview Rosie, they had nothing but praises for the teen singer. As Simon put it, “Absolutely, bloody fantastic!” She received four “yeses” and eventually went as far as the semi-finals.
Rosie may not have won the competition that year, but she’s gone on to have a successful career in the music industry thanks to the show. In fact, she even stunned the world by revealing a huge weight loss (with the help of a gastric sleeve operation) that left her unrecognizable.
It’s an inspiring audition from a woman that lacked confidence – when really, she was born to be a star.
