Do you have an old sweater that hasnโt seen the light of the day in months or even years? If you nod your head right now, youโve probably also thought of throwing it away. Well, donโt because you can upcycle your sweater into a beautiful top.
Instead of throwing away old clothes, you can always transform them into beautiful pieces. You donโt even need a Fairy godmother to transform your clothes from rags to riches. Take, for example, the YouTubers and influencers sharing their thrift flips or reworked garments online.
By transforming your old clothes into new pieces, youโre not only helping save our environment, but you get a brand new piece to use for work or school.
To do so, grab your old sweater and wash it. Then prepare the following materials:
- Old sweater
- Fabric scissors
- Ruler
- The extra fabric of choice
- Iron
- Sewing machine or thread and needle
- Two buttons
The first step is to cut the neck of the sweater to create a swoop neck.

Second, cut the bottom of the sweater in a straight line. Use the ruler to create a straight line before cutting the bottom. Then cut the middle on the front side of the sweater. It should look like the picture above.

Then using the fabric cut out from the bottom sweater, cut it to create three separate sections.

Take out the extra fabric that you will pair with the sweater. Make sure that it matches with your old sweater.
Using the extra fabric, cut it into a square. Fold it into a triangle like in the photo and then overlap the edges to create an open envelope shape.

Cut it again to create long strips of cloth and sew it together to form one long fabric strip. After sewing the fabric together, the fabric should be folded lengthwise in half. This fabric will be ironed to make sure it is completely smooth.
Once the fabric is smooth, itโs time to sew the fabric into the sweater!

Sew the fabric on the edges of the front that had been cut open. Be sure to watch your fingers at the sewing machine!
Once you are done sewing the edges, itโs time to take out the fabric scrap from the neck of the sweater. Cut the fabric into two identical rounded pockets. Then sew the extra colored fabric onto the edges like you did before and saw them onto the old sweater. Place them on each side of the front opening.

Of course, a sweater should have buttons too.
Sew the buttons at the top of the sweater. You can pick any button design as long as itโs perfect for your sweater.

And voila! You now have transformed your old sweater into a cool winter piece.
Letโs not forget the fabric scraps from the bottom of the sweater. Lee Young-Kyung, the DIY creator of this old sweater project, used it to create a matching scarf!
