She left her life in the city to run a farm for animals with special needs, some who would have been shot if not for her program.

14 years ago, Di Slaney left her life in the city behind to run a farm in Nottinghamshire. The unique sanctuary for animals with special needs takes care of 170 otherwise unwanted animals, some with severe deformations.

Animals like Dumpy, a sheep with a massive deformed jaw who didn’t have a place in the world before coming to Di’s farm.

Many of these animals would not even be alive if it weren’t for Di Slaney’s animal sanctuary.

It’s not about farming to Di, it’s about the animals. She works around the clock to take care of the 170 animal outcasts. Including Dumpy with the deformed jaw, an oversized goat, arthritic sheep, and nearsighted pigs.

The oversized goat, Ronnie, was going to be sent to the slaughterhouse before Di saved him.

“I’ve never wanted to do farming, I still don’t want to do farming, so this is not about wanting to farm. It’s about running a farm sanctuary and offering animals a different way of life, animals who needed help.” Said Slaney.

Di and her team work tirelessly to make sure these animals not only are taken care of but have companions to make life easier.

It’s an around the clock job but Di loves it, a big part of what they do is finding the animals good companions so that they always have a friend when Di and her team members aren’t around.

“The reward is helping animals and seeing them blossom. Finding them the right companion is a big part of what we do so that when we’re not here out in the field, they can have a happier more fulfilled life on their own.” Slaney told the BBC.

These animals have given Di a purpose in life and a way to really feel like she’s doing something for the greater good!

Animals can really teach you a lot, the simplicity of their lives can show you the complexity of yours. In this case, Di and the animals were able to help each other which is truly amazing. Although the job isn’t easy, the animals are all she needs to keep pushing herself. Now Di gets to make a difference doing something she loves, and that’s what life is all about.
