Humanity exploits animals in a whole lot of different ways, and one of the worst is the fur trade. Centuries ago, when there weren’t any other options, fur might have been acceptable, but now, when it’s totally unnecessary to kill animals purely to turn their coats into clothes, it’s crazy to think that this practice is still going on.

New laws are gradually coming into place and many leading fashion designers have finally vowed to stop using fur altogether, but the trade is still big in many markets and countries, including Russia. There, sables are a very popular choice for fur farmers. There are around 70 different Russian farms dedicated to raising sables for slaughter.

The fur of these animals is exceptionally soft and silky smooth, so it’s highly prized by those who have no problem buying and wearing fur. The sables are used to create coats, bedspreads, and even underwear too. They’re often born in captivity and live sad, lonely lives until a painful death puts them out of their misery.

That sad existence was going to be the case for this little critter too, until a kind, animal-loving lady named Zhenya decided to save her!

Zhenya, a young Russian woman, always knew about sable fur farms operating in her country, but it was only later in life that she learned it was possible to save the lives of sables by buying their freedom and taking them out of the farms.

Knowing she could save a life, she decided to take action!

After living for so long in a horrible fur farm, Zhenya’s new furry friend, named Umora, has needed some time to adapt.

Zhenya says the little critter has quite a “difficult personality… she’s quite emotional, sometimes even a bit hysterical. Umora is also cheeky and likes to steal stuff.”

It sounds like Zhenya has her hands full with this one, but it’s much better to see Umora alive than turned into a coat.

Zhenya says that sables aren’t really made for life as pets.

One has to go through a lot before they can start living with it comfortably. It requires a lot of time and patience. It might even take a couple of years for you to begin to fully enjoy your life with it.

It definitely sounds like sables aren’t for everyone, but there are still plenty of adorable moments Zhenya gets to share with Umora and upload to their many followers on Instagram, just like this super cute video of Umora stretching out on a table.

Out in the wild, sables live in forests. They can travel multiple miles in a single day in search of food and are very active, energetic creatures. They’re good climbers and tend to be most active at night.

As well as Russia, they can also be found in Mongolia, Japan, China, Kazakhstan, and North Korea.

Every year, more than a billion rabbits and 50 million more animals of other species like mink, foxes, and sables like Umora, are trapped on fur farms around the world or hunted down in the wild to be killed for their fur.

Many celebrities and leading figures have spoken out against fur and it’s great to see kindhearted people like Zhenya doing their bit to help out and set a super example too. Check out her Instagram for more amazing photos and videos of Umora.
