One beautiful but windy day in May, a woman named Susan Simon stepped out of her home in Michigan and her life was changed forever.
Susan was already familiar with House finches. In fact, they usually built their nest homes in her plants but what surprised her this day wasnโt the nests but a tiny pink hatch-ling in her front porch.
She knew what happened to this poor 1-day old baby, the wind knocked the nest down and this little House Finch fell to the ground.

Good thing this little fighter was alive!
โWhen I first found him, he was just a naked little thing with fuzz on his head about as big as my thumb,โ Susan said to The Dodo.
She tucked the tiny bird in her hand to keep it warm. She waited for the mother to come back but it didnโt.
She instinctively grabbed a Tupperware inside her home and she lined it with paper towels. Susan then carefully placed the tiny baby inside and made sure that this little fighter was kept warm.

She knew she had to take care of this baby. She is now the mommy of this little baby bird. Using a toothpick, she patiently fed the tiny newborn baby.
She was able to understand how to do this by searching the Internet.
โAt first he didnโt want to open his mouth โ I think he was weak and cold,โ Simon added in her interview. โI got him to take some food and then I had to feed him every 15 minutes for the first couple of weeks.โ
It sure wasnโt an easy job for Susan. The fragile bird was so tiny; keeping it warm and fed was a challenge.

โI didnโt think I was going to be able to keep him alive,โ she added, โbut I did.โ
Days went by and the little bird grew. He started eating more, and would wake up to ask for food.
โThen his little pin feathers started coming in and he looked like a tiny dinosaur.โ

Susan monitored the birdโs weight and of course, she also gave him a name.
Meet Twerp!
Time flies and at 3 weeks old, Twerp already has his own cage with his very own food and water dish. He already has gorgeous feathers and the tiny hatchling is now a big boy who can now fly!
Susan made sure that she always brings Twerp outside. This way, he would be familiar with nature โ his natural habitat.

One day, after being fed, Twerp flew away. Though, he used to come in from time to time and even ask for food, most of the time, as if yelling to get it! Susan decided to put a bird feeder in her porch and soon, Twerp grew bigger and became independent.
He stopped coming back to Susan.

โI was sad when he left,โ Simon said to The Dodo, โbut kind of happy that he was [back] where he was supposed to be.โ
Until today, Susan is still amazed with what happened. That one faithful day, Twerp came to her life and she became its mom.
