Many young girls still dream of becoming a princess one day. As for Sarah Culberson, she got the surprise of her life when at the age of twenty-eight, she found out she actually WAS a princess!

Sarah Culberson grew up with her adopted family and always knew she was different.

When Sarah was one year old, she was adopted by an all-white family, so she always knew she was different in that way.

When she was little, her older sister’s friends asked if she was black or had a really good tan – and her older sister explained that she was half white and half West African.

Although Sarah had a great relationship with her adopted family, she wanted to know who her biological parents were, so in her twenties, she started looking. She found her mom in her first year of graduate school, but sadly she had passed away from cancer.

Her father’s sister called and excitingly told her about her royal lineage!

When she answered the phone, her aunt and uncle continue to say how happy they are that she has been found, asking if she knew who she was.

Of course, taken aback by this question, she confusingly responded, saying she was Sarah. But they told her she was also part of a royal family.

After getting dressed in the proper attire, she is greeted by hundreds of people in their village.

When she arrives with her father in the village, everyone welcomes her, and the women, wearing the same green dress like her, come forward and sing a song to welcome her. The song consisted of the lyrics, “we are preparing for Sarah.”

Sierra Leone was coming out of an eleven-year-old civil war in 2004.

This war left more than fifty thousand people dead, something that obviously still haunted the people.

She was able to tour the high school, and she saw what happened after the eleven-year blood diamond war; people with missing limbs and the damage to the building itself.

For Sarah, this was a wake-up call, and although it was initially to meet her family, she knew she had work to do. So her adoptive and biological family worked together to create a nonprofit that supports local communities in Sierra Leone.
