A group of costumed “witches and warlocks” paddled their way in the offbeat Florida Keys to join this year’s Full Moon Witches’ Paddle in celebration of the October full moon last October 13.

Nearly two dozen participants attended the event which started at Crane Point Museum & Nature Center, a favorite launch spot among eco-tours. From there, the participants made bayside stops at Banana Bay Resort & Marina before ending at the Middle Keys’ iconic Faro Blanco Resort lighthouse.

The idea of a full moon celebration or full moon party is popular most especially in October, where Halloween is about to come. This party is synonymous to an all-night beach party where everyone just have fun and enjoy the moonlit night courtesy of the bright, full moon.

This concept, however, did not originate in the United States. The first full moon party was actually conducted in Thailand back in 1983 and was only participated in by about 20-30 travelers. From then on, this party concept got famous through word of mouth and has been popular among beach resorts all over the world.

A full moon party can be done once each month during the time when the moon is full, of course, and some resorts make it a monthly event where their patrons can join in even if it is not Halloween. For Florida Keys residents, celebrating a full moon party is nothing new but this time, the idea of paddling and kayaking in costumes made a great impact, prompting nearly two dozens of people to decide to participate.

Karen Thurman, a resident of Florida Keys who have been living in the area for a long time, started the event through proposing the idea to her Facebook friends. They liked her proposal and from there, about two dozen participants decided to join the activity to paddle off the coast of Marathon into the sunset.

At first, it might seem silly that people had to wear costumes while paddling and kayaking, but Halloween is all about being silly, creative, unique and fun anyway so why not make it as weird as possible, right? The idea that Thurman conjured up was definitely unusual and that’s what made it more appealing to the people she shared it with.

The event was conducted in the late afternoon and participants were made to paddle their way until the sun finally set. What would you feel if you see people in witches’ clothes and pointy hats slowly reaching the shoreline while the sun was gradually setting? To be honest, it was a creepy sight that totally captured the Halloween vibe!
