There are times in life when we feel like we’re working hard, doing everything we’re supposed to do, and yet somehow — it just doesn’t seem to be enough. Most of us have been there a time or two — some of us are just a little more empathetic than others.
A waiter named Johnny worked his shift at a restaurant just like always — but had no idea a total stranger would change his life.
A family was dining at a restaurant called Don Pablo in Dallas, Texas when they were wrapping up their dinner. The dad, Maurice Green, had noticed throughout their dining experience that something about their server wasn’t quite right.
After discussing it with his daughter, Maurice knew exactly what he was going to do to brighten up their server, Johnny’s day. As a total stranger, there wasn’t much he could do. But as a customer — he knew he could certainly do something.
Maurice decided to make his server’s day by leaving not only 20% — but an additional $100 on top of that.
When Johnny comes back to the table to collect the signed copy of the receipt, this is when Maurice asks him a simple question, “how’s your day been going so far?”
To this, he looks down and shakes his head — he tells the family that his day has been pretty rough so far. Maurice empathetically tells him that he noticed, and wants to do something about it.
This is when he hands him the signed receipt with the 20% tip, Johnny is grateful — but then he sees the $100 bill.
Once he sees the generous cash tip, he starts to break down in tears; he tells the generous man that he just paid for his car.
When the man hears this, his ears perk up, and he explains that he wants the young man to have a Merry Christmas. Johnny can’t believe the generosity from someone he only knew from serving their food.
He continues to cry and thank the man.
After a bit of helpful life advice from Maurice, the kindness continued.
He says, “You know what? Let me do better than that,” and hands the young man another $100 bill.
Immediately after he takes the second $100 bill, Maurice takes it up one more notch and hands him yet another $100 bill — his tip now totaling over $300.
