In an apartment complex, it is without a doubt that you will encounter some unique characters.
There are always those neighbors who seem bonkers. There may even be one crazy old lady who has a million shopping bags at any given time. Then there is inevitably that one family who is always loud.
And aside from the people, there are always some crazy animals nearby – whether it’s a dog with way too much energy or even squirrels running and playing about in the courtyard.
Ugly
But then there are some that leave an impact on you. One man who lived at this complex said,
“Everybody in the complex knew who Ugly was. Ugly loved three things in this world: garbage-eating, fighting, and love.”
This cat was not like any other feline at this complex.
Having spent his whole life outside living like a hobo was beginning to take its toll on Ugly. He had only one eye left, presumably with the other one lost in a fight. He was left with just a gaping hole where they eye should have been. He also was missing an ear on one side and his left foot was in no condition to have fun or play, like a normal cat. It clearly had been badly broken at one time.
A heartbreaking tale
The break had healed at an unnatural angle, and so he always looked like he was turning the corner when he walked. He had also lost his tail, probably in one of his fights, so he was left with a little stump that would jerk and twist. Cats need their tails for balance, which is probably why he looked a little funny while walking (aside from the broken foot).
Ugly was also covered in scabs. This prevented everybody from seeing his lovely tabby fur. Every time somebody saw Ugly they said the same thing,
“That’s one UGLY cat!”
Little kids at the complex were told not to touch him. Parents probably figured he looked so horrible that he might be carrying a disease. The adults used a hose to get him to go away, or in even worse cases, threw rocks at him to get him to leave.
Ugly did not falter, though. He just stood there and did not move until the cruel adult gave up and walked away. He would even curl up at your feet and show you forgiveness. He loved the little kids, too. Whenever he saw them, he would run up to them and rub his head on their hands, hoping they would pet him. He would suck on your shirt or your ears, whatever he could find.
Tragedy struck when the Huskies in one of the apartments mauled him to death. By the time somebody got to him, he was laying there, taking his last breaths.

Love
One person scooped him up and held him close, while he purred the entire time. He just wanted to be held and loved for his last few moments. He didn’t even try to bite or get away, as some animals who feel threatened are wont to do. He just wanted to be loved for the last few minutes of his little life. It is at least comforting to know that Ugly is without any more pain or abuse.
So, the next time you wish to be more beautiful, rich, well-liked, or famous….it may behoove you to say,
“I want to be Ugly.”
