Weddings are usually full of all kinds of emotions. They’re happy, joyous occasions, but they also signify the opening of a new chapter (which can be tearjerking for a parent).
A lot of family members give speeches on the bride and groom’s big day – but what one dad had to say during his daughter’s ceremony takes the cake.
Get ready to laugh, and cry a little too.
The beautiful couple was standing in the church with all their guests seated. It was time for the bride’s father to make a speech.
He started out,
“Philip, I want to tell you a story…”
Now, this could have any groom sweating a little bit. It could be a funny story, a horror story, a “you should probably run” story… Come on, why so open-ended?
The dad begins his story talking about the day he and his wife found out they were having another baby (the bride). He then turned to God with a request.
“So I prayed, ‘Lord if it’s Your Will…make her a little girl.’ And He did.”
Next, the father goes on to describe another question he asked God after she was born.
“And I looked at her and said, ‘Lord make her like her mother.’ And He did.”
There was a huge change about to happen.
In the speech, the dad explained how his daughter became loving and kind like his wife. But he was also feeling a bit “left out.”
“So I said, ‘Lord, make her like me.’ And He did.”
Everyone laughed as he described how his daughter could drive a tractor and truck, chew tobacco, and even load hay. He then funnily says,
“Do you realize what you’re getting?”
When the father came to the conclusion that maybe she was turning out too much like him, he went to God with another favor.
“So I said, ‘Lord that’s enough of that! Make her like YOU.'”
In a touching moment, the dad talks about all the beautiful, selfless acts his daughter has done. From being a nurse, saving lives, and also spreading the word of the Lord.
He wasn’t satisfied though. There was one puzzle piece left.
“But still something was missing. So I said ‘Lord, make her happy… and she met you.”
Immediately the groom wipes a tear out of his eye (who can blame him). You can’t see the guests’ reactions, but surely a lot of them needed tissues at that moment as well.
“You see that look on her face? I never saw that, until she met you. And I’m grateful for that…”
Fortunately, there was more humor to come.
He continued,
“Today I’m giving you the best thing I have to give. And I just wanted to let you know before I do that… how hard me and God has worked to get her ready.”
Everyone burst out laughing again. Of course, Phillip did too – all while wiping his tears.
Many have called it the “best” wedding speech ever. One commenter wrote:
“As a former wedding photographer of over 350 weddings, this is by far the best ‘giving of the bride’ speech ever witnessed.”
and:
“As a father of 3 girls and a boy married to a nurse, I have to say that is the best ‘giving away’ of the bride ever! Congrats to all.”
It’s brought on the waterworks for a lot of people, all while making them crack up too.
Yet, there was one more piece of advice the bride’s dad had, and it was probably the greatest anyone could give…
