We’ve all heard the story of the tortoise and the hare. The story, which is one of Aesop’s Fables that is numbered 226 in the Perry Index, is an account of an ambitious hare who ridicules a tortoise.
The overly arrogant hare constantly puts the tortoise down because of his slow moving ways.
The tortoise finally has enough and challenges the hare to a race.
The hare accepts, thinking there is no way that the tortoise could win. When the race begins, the hare takes off leaving the tortoise in the dust. He’s so confident he’ll win that he stops to take a snooze mid-race.
When he wakes up from his nap, he realizes that the tortoise, though slow and steady, won the race.
But that’s just a story right? How could a slow tortoise actually win a race against a fast moving hare? Maybe in the story books but not in real life… right?
Wrong! When put to task, a tortoise actually beat out a hare in a race.
A real life race between a tortoise and a rabbit was actually held as a crowd watched on. The two animals were placed side by side in different lanes to race. And the real race went EXACTLY as it did in the story.
The rabbit started off strong, but about halfway through the race he started to hold back. That’s when the tortoise, slowly but surely, caught up. Then, he crept ahead of the rabbit. Then the tortoise casually proceeded and went on to win the race.
The crowd cheered wildly as he won.
“The bunny was like ‘Whoa there! I better stick to the script,” said one YouTuber.
“Moral of the story: Slow and steady wins the race!!!” said another.
“This video was far more awesome than I thought it would be.”
“So the story was true after all!”
Some commented that it was a rabbit competing in the race and not a hare, and that a hare could have covered the distance in one jump.
This isn’t the first time someone tried to test out the story. Super Deluxe also held a race between a tortoise and hare in downtown Los Angeles which was hosted on a live stream.
The same exact thing happened.
The animals stood in place for about 11 minutes before the rabbit sprinted ahead. However, he stopped and the turtle ended up winning.
