Hurricane Harvey is losing power gradually but Texas residents are still fighting against ongoing flooding.
The storm that has hit the state is historic and continues to wreak havoc on native citizens. Despite all the damage and chaos in Houston and the surrounding areas, however, the storm has also revealed some of humanities best tendencies as well. Sometimes, there’s even a little bit of humor involved.
This story out of Pearland, Texas is frightening—but also kind of cute.
It all started when high school sophomore Renz Michael looked out his window and saw something down below.
Michael’s entire neighborhood had been significantly flooded with several feet of water on the ground in most places. Though he had been seeking refuge in his house and not going outside like most of the others, he eventually noticed something.
Down on the street was a toddler, wading alone through the floodwater.
Michael initially put the toddler on Snapchat with the caption, “you good?”
Still, he was too curious and concerned to let the bizarre event pass by. He went outside and decided to investigate the situation for himself. In order to get close enough to communicate with the child, he needed to get pretty wet himself.
Once close enough he started asking the little girl some questions: “Where are you going?”
Michael carefully Snapchatted his entire encounter.
As he got closer, he could see the little girl was wearing only a diaper and a purple t-shirt while clutching a baby bottle. Still, she wasn’t answering any of Michael’s questions and seemed determined to be on her way. “Where are your parents?” he asked. “Do they know you’re walking out?” “Yeah!” she said emphatically.
As it turns out, everyone involved was in for a surprise.
Michael eventually ended up walking all the way home with the toddler.
Upon arriving at her doorstep, her parents came outside—and they were surprised. “I found her walking outside by herself,” Michael explained to them.
Needless to say, this little girl was telling Michael stories—her parents had no idea she had snuck out!
Although there’s some humor in this story, it’s lucky Michael was on the scene to help out.
Children are naturally curious and it’s one of their best qualities. Still, in emergency situations like the one in Houston, that tendency can also get them into trouble. In this case, everyone involved returned home safe and sound. Moral of this story: make sure your toddlers don’t escape the house if your neighborhood floods!
