It’s summertime once more! Now you can finally stay outdoors and enjoy the sun, get a tan or maybe hit the beach with your friends and family. It is such a lovely season meant for enjoying a lot of activities and events. But, do you know something that everyone hates about the summer? They’re bright, fast and make all kinds of loud buzzing noises when they get too close. That’s right…wasps!
Wasps are like many other insects. They help with pollination and are useful in making the Earth a greener planet. But still, we cannot ignore the fact that despite their contribution to the environment, having too many wasps near our homes can get really annoying and even dangerous since their sting can be quite nasty.
Every summer it is not uncommon to see people getting stung by these insects. It does not matter if you go near their nest or not. If there is a wasp nest in your neighborhood, there is a high chance that a wasp is lurking into your house even if you are not near its nest. The tiny little insects find holes and crannies to crawl into and if you’re not careful they could form a nest near your porch or even inside your home.
Luckily, there is one simple solution to your wasp predicament. A wasp trap! And mind you, there is no need to buy one at all. You simply need to follow these steps and voila! Your D-I-Y wasp trap is ready to help keep your skin safe from nasty stings.
Step 1: Get the materials you need for this project.
In this home-made wasp trap, all you need are:
– A used two-liter soda bottle
– Marker
– Cutter or Knife
– A piece of wire if you wish to hang the trap
– Something sweet to attract the wasps
Step 2: Mark the soda bottle.
Now that you gathered all you need for the trap, you should begin with marking the soda bottle just underneath its taper. Writing a perfectly straight line around the soda bottle may be a bit difficult so what you can do to make sure it’s straight is tie a string around where you’re supposed to mark the bottle and use that string as a guide in tracing a straight line.
Step 3: Making the bait
This is the part where you can get creative. Wasps―actually, insects in general―are attracted to sweet food and beverages. In making your DIY wasp trap, be sure to prepare any sweet food that you think will attract these insects the most.
You can put apple juice with a bit of sugar into it or you can put soda into it if you’d like. A mixture of water and jam is also a good bait formula. After putting your sugary concoction together be sure to add a bit of vinegar in the solution because we do not want bees to get trapped, too. The vinegar will prevent bees from getting close.
Step 4: Cut the marked area to create a funnel.
You have to be careful in cutting the marked part of the soda bottle. In case you are not comfortable with using a knife, you can try using a box cutter instead. Once cut, the top part of the bottle will be flipped upside down so that it looks like a funnel.
Next, get the top of the bottle and flip it upside down. Place it on the other half of the bottle because it will serve as a funnel where wasps can go through to get to the sweet solution waiting for them at the base of the soda bottle.
Step 5: Where is the trap going to stay?
Deciding on where to put your wasp trap depends on what you are doing or where the wasps are. If you are out on a picnic with family, you might want to put the wasp trap just outside of the table or area where you are set up so that wasps will be lured into the trap instead of your food.
If you just want to get rid of the wasps around the vicinity of your home, you can place the trap on top of a sturdy place near the area where the wasp nest is located.
Step 6: Hanging the wasp trap
If you want to hang the trap you made, you need to punch two holes across each other on the bottle. Make sure that the holes are made on both the top and the bottom parts so that the wire can pierce cleanly through. Once done, secure the ends of the wire and proceed to hang it wherever you want.
There you have it! You can now rest easy and enjoy the summer because you can lure the wasps away with this simple and easy do-it-yourself solution to your wasp predicament.
