When you send your kids to school, you expect the teachers to protect your children, not humiliate them. That’s exactly why one mother was outraged when this teacher threw away the snack that she packed her son, calling it “unhealthy.”

This mother is outraged when her 4-year-old has his favorite snack thrown away in front of his classmates.
Elaina Daoust has a 4-year-old child who attends school in the Durham Catholic School District, the district recently added a strict policy for a healthy food initiative. The initiative requires the children to bring healthy food for lunch and encourages the parents to be mindful of what they pack for lunch.
Elaina never thought the banana bread she packed her son would be deemed unhealthy, after all, it’s her son’s favorite snack and made with bananas. The school felt that because it had chocolate chips, the snack was unhealthy and threw it away.
The problem the mother has isn’t in the throwing away of the snack, but in the way they did it, humiliating her child.
It’s totally understandable why Elaina is not happy with the school. At the tender age of 4, kids don’t fully understand situations and can easily be scarred for life. Humiliating them in front of their classmates could have lasting negative effects on such a small child.
“He came home with a chart (listing healthy food ideas) and told me he and the teacher talked about it and healthy choices. She also sent a note to me. I was really, really, really mad for several reasons.” Elaina told the Star.
The snacks the school banned include; goldfish, crackers, string cheese, juice boxes, and granola bars. It seems a bit excessive.
The list of snacks they banned are snacks that most kids grow up eating their whole life. However, the school stands by its decision to ban the snacks and throw away “unhealthy” snacks that are brought to school.
Not everyone in the school district is thrilled with the actions of the school. James Mackinnon, a teaching and learning consultant with the school board said:
“There is nowhere in our policy or procedures that says our staff is allowed to take food away from a student.”
Turns out, Elaina’s son wasn’t the only student subjected to the harsh treatment. Around 30 parents have since come forward, saying the same thing happened to their child
Around 30 unhappy parents have come forward to tell a similar story. I don’t think the problem is with the school trying to be healthy and ban certain snacks, but more so how they go about taking the snacks from the children.
I would definitely be furious if someone made my 4-year-old cry and be humiliated in front of his class! What about you? Do you think the school is justified in its actions? Let us know what you think!
Mother is furious after school throws away sons “unhealthy” snack – It was the way the school did it, humiliating him, that’s what made her angry.
