There’s a lot of strange things we see in our lives throughout the day, especially when you live in a large city with public transit. A seemingly rare thing to see though is a dog riding a bus or train all by itself.
If you live in a city like New York, you have probably seen a dog riding the train with its owner at one point or another (the law is that the dog has to fit in a bag).
What you may not know though is that dogs riding trains is still not allowed in many cities.
Dogs in Auckland, New Zealand have just been made allowed to ride public transit on the condition that they wear a muzzle or stay inside of a cage.
Seattle, on the other hand. Well, that is a different story.
In Seattle, WA, there is a dog named Eclipse who has learned to ride the subway all by herself. She is able to catch the bus even when her owner is not with her and happily takes herself to the park. Nothing like a little solo doggy day date!
“Every day she leaves her house by herself and takes the bus downtown to the dog park where she spends a couple of hours getting exercise and making friends,” a Seattle citizen said. “And then she takes the bus back home again.”
While most humans are honestly struggling to figure out which bus to take and which direction to travel in, this dog is commuting on a daily basis with zero issues. You can’t say that’s not impressive, at least a little bit.
This independent dog essentially walks herself!
Eclipse’s owner is named Jeff Young. Apparently, the two were on their way to the park when Jeff wasn’t moving fast enough for Eclipse. So what did she do? Flew ahead, left him behind, and caught the bus herself. Ouch.
The driver knew where the dog was headed so he made sure she got off at the right stop. Her owner Jeff got the next bus right behind it and met her there, seeing that she was all safe and sound.
Jeff knew he had a smart dog, but this was when he realized she was extraordinarily smart. Having this realization, he decided to test out the waters.
Jeff would go on to put Eclipse on a few more solo trips as an experiment. He wanted to see how she would handle it and if she would get to the correct destination, and she kept on passing the test.
As for Seattle law, the police have said that they are a-okay with the dog riding by herself as long as the bus driver and bus company are okay with it. Of course, they said they are, and it has been smooth sailing ever since.
The pup even has her own bus pass attached to her collar, as if this story couldn’t get any cuter than it already is.
And Eclipse is always making friends on the ride there too. She’s not only smart, but she’s so friendly!
“Many of the regular passengers enjoy seeing her every day and will often sit down next to her,” Robbie Lauren shares.
We would sit next to Eclipse on the bus if we ever saw her, that is for sure!
