Whales are one of the most majestic creatures of the sea. Sadly, they’re also often one of the most misunderstood. Strangers to these massive beings frequently mistake them for ‘killers’ but what they don’t know is they’re really more like the gentle giants of the sea.
A few fun facts should dispel that notion pretty rapidly, however.
For instance, did you know the hippopotamus is the whale’s closest living relative today? More importantly, did you know they’re considered to be fairly non-agressive when it comes to people?
In fact, there are so many wonderful and fascinating attributes of these massive creatures that people go out whale watching on the regular.
Similar to whales, people also love spending time in the ocean.
Surfers are a perfect example. Although their primary goal is to catch a big wave and ride it all the way back to shore, sometimes, they experience some unexpected things.
If you spend enough time out there, you’re bound to see some amazing things.
Considering surfers are sharing the same water as whales, there are times when they experience things non-surfers can only dream about. One of these is when a whale breaches, meaning it jumps into the air and then lands back in the ocean. Being so large, it’s amazing they can do this.
But sometimes the wonderful world of the ocean can catch a person off guard.
On rare occasions, whether using a drone or while in a plane, someone captures both a whale and surfers together. Depending on the situation, the people surfing might not even know there’s a gigantic mammal nearby.
That’s what happened off the Southern California coast.
A group of surfers were enjoying a gorgeous day. The only thing on their mind was catching big waves. But they’d soon discover they weren’t alone in the water that day.
Approximately 15 to 20 surfers, all wearing wetsuits, were in the ocean waiting for the waves to roll in.
They’re having a blast, totally unaware that not far away, a massive whale is slowly approaching them.
As the video continues to play, you can see the whale making its way closer to the group of surfers.
Still, they have no idea what’s lurking beneath the water. You can’t help but feel a little bit of tension, wondering how it’s going to turn out.
The only thing noticeable from the air is a few small splashes as the its tail hits the surface of the water.
Whether or not any of the surfers noticed is yet to be seen. Considering there’s still some distance between them, probably not.
Once the whale gets pretty close to the surfers, it quietly goes deeper into the water.
At that point, you can still see it from the sky but the outline of its body becomes less visible as it approaches the group.
When the whale is a mere 20 feet from the surfers, it comes back up, now showing itself in all its glory.
That’s when the surfers see it.
But instead of panicking, they sit quietly on their surfboards, watching and waiting.
As the whale swims right into the middle of the group, it gets just a couple of feet away from one surfer. Yet, they all remain calm. But then, the one that was super close, begins to paddle away.
The whale continues to maneuver its huge body around the others and then swims off.
This amazing footage proves that the massive whale wasn’t trying to hurt anybody. Like most of us, it was just a curious creature checking out the party.
Thankfully, the surfers acted exactly as they should by not splashing around or making any sudden movements. This allowed the whale to move freely among them and satisfy its curiosity without feeling threatened in any way.
One thing that’s pretty amazing is that they will always have video proof of that one time they swam with a whale. Something most people definitely won’t be able to say.
