Miguel and Ada Rojas took a walk under the palm trees of Miami with their 3-year-old Chihuahua, Gucci, as part of their daily routine.
The elderly couple enjoyed their leisurely stroll, and expected this day to be just like any other. But a cruel twist of fate quickly landed them in a dire situation.
Out of nowhere, two large American bull dogs came rushing towards them. They attacked defenceless little Gucci on her leash, and all the couple could do was try to pull them away.
Miguel and Ada are both 90 years old, and couldn’t manage to fight them off. Their brutal attack resulted in Gucci’s death, and left the elderly couple hospitalized.
Ada needed a whopping 100 stitches in total, and Miguel was rushed to hospital with high blood-pressure brought on by stress.
They were absolutely heartbroken over the loss of their beloved dog. And their tragic story was so horrific that it made the local news.
That’s where Mario Cambo learned about what the couple had endured. He knew nothing would ever bring Gucci back, but he wanted to do something to help.
“I saw the story yesterday and right away I said I needed to do something and I did something because this broke my heart,” Mario said, according to iHeartDogs.
He went to the Wee Puppy Paws Kennel in Homestead, Florida, and bought a new puppy for the couple.
Lynn Broderick, who works for the organization, learned why he was buying the dog she sold it to him at a discount.
The story was so heartbreaking that she wanted to do whatever she could to help as well.
Mario made arrangements with the couple’s daughter to surprise them with their new furry friend.
Miguel immediately burst into tears when their daughter revealed the surprise. He was still grieving the loss of Gucci, and would never forget him, but was so happy to have a new puppy to love and care for.
“We felt Gucci’s death very, very deep. And this dog is going to make us continue to live.” – Ada
The pain of losing of a pet, especially in such a horrible way, is impossible to imagine.
“They are family. They are not animals. They are family.” – Miguel and Ada’s daughter
The gift that Mario and the couple’s daughter arranged for them is so heartwarming. It gives both Miguel and Ada, as well as the new puppy, a wonderful new start.
As for the dogs who made the attack, authorities say that one of the dogs was microchipped and they were able to find the owner.
But the second dog, the one that actually killed poor Gucci, is not microchipped and no owner has come forward. The two will remain in quarantine until further notice.
The Roja family is just happy to be recovering, and their daughter couldn’t be happier to see her parents happy again.
“If someone came and offered me a million dollars, we don’t want it. This is what we want. This is unconditional love and therapeutic for my parents. I am already a winner.” – Miguel and Ada’s daughter
