Storm chasers are adrenaline junkies that love following major natural storms, like tornadoes, for research. Their work is invaluable but it is also extremely dangerous. The situations that storm chasers find themselves in can be anything but ordinary.
Jason Weingart, his wife Savannah, and their friend Matt were chasing tornadoes in eastern Texas near a town called Canton. Jason had his camera rolling as he captured the footage from the storm.
Eastern Texas was battered by one of the worst storms they had seen in recent history.
Jason and his small team had been tracking the storm for about an hour before it started producing tornadoes. The second tornado that struck was causing quite a bit of damage near the small town.
“This tornado was a really intense chase, it was difficult terrain with a lot of trees. It was a populated area. We knew that the tornado was doing damage.”
After the tornado had passed, this is when Jason saw just how much damage had been done.
As Jason and his crew are driving slowly through the demolished town, it’s just devastation as far as the eye can see. As they continued driving, this is when they came across a woman flagging them down.
A woman came out from the rubble screaming for help.
Jason jumped out of his truck to assist the woman. It turns out that her name is Sally Knox and she owned an exotic animal farm. Her property had been completely destroyed and she needed help wrangling up her animals.
The animals on her property ranged from camels and zebras to monkeys, parrots, and horses. Some were missing, some were hurt — the devastation was all around.
As they walk around the property, Sally notices one of her small colts trapped underneath debris and a fallen fence.
The tornado had caused the baby horse to get picked up and then become completely stuck underneath debris, rubble, and a property fence.
“I just grab its hind legs and I just start pulling as hard as I can. After a couple seconds I pulled it out from under the fence and I got it out but it still wasn’t getting up. I was afraid that it might be hurt.”
After one more pull from underneath the debris, the colt was finally able to get up.
Jason says that he had never seen a storm so fresh and so detrimental. He understands that coming across dangerous and unique situations is part of the job. We’re so thankful he was at the right place at the right time.
