Once a special bond has been created, there is nothing that can tear it apart, including space. Two neighbors created such a strong bond that nothing has been able to keep them apart. This pair is 95-year-old Sally and Brody, her next door neighbor’s St. Bernard. Sally and Brody have been the best of friends ever since the Mazarella Family from next door brought Brody home as a puppy.
Sally lost her husband in 1990 and has lived alone ever since. The Mazarella family moved into the house right next door to Sally in 2004. At the time they were a growing family with young children. Sally was the first neighbor to introduce the Mazarella family to the neighborhood.
“We moved to the neighborhood in 2004. Sally was the first resident on the block and as soon as we got here she brought over a plate of cookies for my kids when they were little,” Dave Mazarella remembers.
The Mazzarella’s and Sally stayed close neighbors throughout the years. There are no fences or barriers that separate their two properties from the other. This had been helpful once the Mazzarella family brought home a new puppy, a St. Bernard named Brody. Sally remembers the first time she met Brody, he had showed up at her backdoor, but she was unprepared for the new puppy and did not have anything to give him.
“I thought, well, maybe he wants some old bread. And he loved it! And to this day, you will not believe it, he will not take dog food from me! He only wants bread from me…” Sally laughingly tells.
The two have been inseparable ever since. As Brody has grown out of his puppy stage he still relies on his friendship with Sally. He could be found multiple times a day at Sally’s house and has even walked her to church as a companion.
“Brody would sit with Sally and they’d watch their favorite weather forecaster,” Mazzarella recalls. If Sally was not at the back door “he would come over on the side here put his front paws up and look to the window trying to keep trying to find out where she’s at.”
While Brody was becoming a full-grown St. Bernard, Sally was growing older too. She suffered a mild heart attack. Following the heart attack, she had to relocate to a senior living center three miles away from Brody. Brody still has not come to terms with losing his best friend next door.
“Four months later, he still runs over to her house and puts his paws up on the window. He still lopes off to the back and rounds the corner to the sliding door and sits there waiting for his friend,” Mazzarella explains.
Thankfully, the Mazzarella family does not want Brody or Sally to lose each other either, so the Mazzarella’s now bring Brody to Sally. About once a week the Mazzarella’s let Brody visit Sally at her new home. Sally lights up when Brody arrives, and Brody sits down and gets ready for his long-awaited rubs from his best friend.
Brody has an Instagram account, where everyone can follow Brody’s adventures. Including his Christmas visit to Sally! Check it out here.
