โI did not really know anything about raising a baby squirrel and had to do a lot of research,โ Simone said. โI never knew that raising a squirrel could be this hard.โ
A woman named Simone Serfontein had no plans to take in a pet squirrel. But sometimes, life takes us on a surprising path. And for Simone, that path ended up leading her to become not only a squirrel foster mama but also a squirrel foster grandma.
It began on an October day in South Africa. Simone was at a friendโs house, and she saw a baby squirrel fall from her nest.

The little one cried and cried for her mama, and Simone watched, waiting to see if the mom would help her baby. But nobody ever came down from the tree.
The baby was on her own.
โWe honestly did not think that this tiny thing would make it, but we needed to try and help this baby,โ Simone told The Dodo. โ
The poor baby squirrel was so tiny and young that it barely had any fur.
โWhen we picked her up her body temperature was very cold and she was obviously very scared,โ Simone recalls. โHer eyes were still closed โฆ We kept her nice and warm and she eventually stopped screaming.โ

Simone wasnโt about to just let the baby suffer all alone, so she took the squirrel, which she named Dingetjie, home with her. Simone and her boyfriend Christof now had to learn how to raise a baby squirrel, which was kind of like caring for a human baby.
It required her to feed the baby squirrel several times during the night.
Simone created a little cage for Dingetjie, but the baby squirrel was wild by nature and did not want to be caged.
So, Simone created Dingetjie a little nest in a shoebox.

Just like a human baby, Dingetjie couldnโt be left alone, Simone had to take the squirrel everywhere she went.
But eventually, Simone knew that Dingetjie would have to be released back into the wild.
And she did, but it wasnโt goodbye for good.
โWe live in the Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa and everything is wild around us,โ Simone said. โThere are many dangerous animals around us that she can run into and she needed to be ready for that.โ

Dingetjieโs animal instincts immediately kicked in when she was let outside. But she always made sure to come back and visit her human mommy.
โEvery day for the first few months was a bit stressful saying goodbye; I always thought that this could maybe be the last time I see her,โ Simone said. โBut then every day when I came home she would be there either waiting or maybe sheโd see me walking home from a tree or something and then a few minutes later she will run inside to come and say hello.โ

Eventually, Simone started leaving a window open so that Dingetjie could come and go as she pleased.
When the squirrel was 6-months-old, Simone noticed that her belly was getting pudgy.
โWe realized she was picking up a lot of weight,โ Simone said. โWe knew she made a few squirrel friends but also thought that she was not yet sexually active. We then discovered that she was pregnant.โ

Dingetjie ended up staying in Simoneโs house for most of her pregnancy. She used toilet paper to create a nest in a drawer.
Unfortunately, her first baby was stillborn.
But Dingetjie ended up getting pregnant again. This time she created several nests in Simoneโs home. This time she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

โSheโs such a smart and clever squirrel. I really think that itโs impossible to ever explain the relationship we have with her and the relationship she has with us,โ Simone explains. โItโs honestly the most incredible thing I have ever experienced.โ
Now, due to some health conditions, Dingjetjie and her babies live with Simone full-time. Itโs clear that theyโre happy and well taken care of. You can see more of Dingjetjieโs adventures on Instagram here.
