As women, we know the life-changing innovation known as Spanx.
The shapewear brand, founded by one of the youngest female billionaires, Sara Blakely, has changed the lives of women around the world.
Blakely understands, first hand, the struggle of balancing a professional career with family life, along with the social pressures brought on by others, and shares her advice with others.
Now, as a wife and mother of four, Blakely enjoys her time with her family, but she very well remembers the days she was concentrated on “building her empire.”
In a recent social media post, Sara Blakely shared an empowering message to women, urging them follow their dreams and establish their own goals. Blakely captioned the photo, explaining the pressure she had felt in her early years to get married and start a family.
She writes:
In my 20’s and 30’s, I felt a lot of pressure to get married. At every wedding (and there were lots of them), some nice lady would inevitably say, “hang in there, someone is going to figure out you’re a good catch.” The set-ups by friends, the sympathetic looks from couples as I dined alone, my biological clock ticking … for women, it’s a different kind of pressure! I met my husband at 35, got married at 37. Oh, and built my empire too
She strengthened her message by concluding her post with hashtags of empowerment such as #WorthTheWait, #FollowYourDreams, and #YouGotThis.
Sara Blakely strives to break away from the social construct that we must live our lives according to a certain timeline or order of events. Since its debut, the photo has received over 9,000 likes, with comments of appreciation and inspiration by women everywhere, with many calling Blakely a “role model.”
Sara Blakely is able to enjoy her role as both a wife, mother, and entrepreneur of her own business. She now believes it is her mission to support, mentor, and empower women to believe in themselves and stay true to their own individuality in the process.
Sara Blakely serves as an example to all of us, unallowing the perceptions and expectations of others to prevent her from becoming the architect of her own life, and inspiring others along the way.
