When you think of synchronized swimming, your mind might wander to movie scenes of girls kicking and flailing in the water. Perhaps you have never seen a true water routine before. Whatever your experience with the sport, you are sure to be impressed by this team’s stellar routine.
The World Swimming Championships of 2009 were held in Rome, and each team trained extensively for the final competition. These talented teams gave extremely impressive performances, but one team stood out above the rest. You’ll never believe what the Spanish team did to set themselves apart from the crowd.
These swimmers perfectly performed their own choreography to “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin. It isn’t hard to see why these ladies took home the gold – their moves were absolutely phenomenal!
The swimmers began with beautiful motions that matched the slow guitar solo in the introduction. Then, as the speed of the music picked up, so did that of the women.
Slow spinning gave way to dramatic motions as the vocalist sang his part. The ladies lined up and swam in a single line, kicking in uncanny unison. As the lead swimmer twirled deep into the water, the rest interlocked their legs in a challenging display of balance.
The team won the favor of the crowd as they lifted up their legs and started moving to the rhythm. At one point the girls kicked in coordination with the drums. It was clear that the team had been practicing this routine wholeheartedly.
The water swelled with splashing as the women joined the rest of the group in gliding through the water. Pointed toes and straight legs gave the performance a polished look. Then, the women did something truly amazing.
They gathered together under the surface of the water, preparing for their next trick. Suddenly, one woman shot up out of the water. The other swimmers were holding her up above the pool! She made it all the way up out of the water before twisting back down into her wavy stage.
Again, the women regrouped underneath the surface. This time, they had an even better trick up their sleeves. Suddenly a swimmer shot up a few feet out of the water. She arched herself back into a perfect backflip! As the crowd watched in awe, the performer prepared to dive down into the depths of the pool.
The swimmers showcased their talent with rhythmic dance moves and flawless flips. Their energy could be felt throughout the stadium. This certainly was a skilled group.
This performance is as unique as it is inspiring. These ladies have proven that anything is possible if you are willing to put in the work.
