When a father in the military gets deployed, the situation affects the whole family. There seems to be nothing to do but wait, miss him terribly, and count the days until he returns. This soldier wanted to be with his family more than anything, so he set up an epic surprise for his homecoming. You’ll never guess how he revealed himself to his family.
Captain Hyrum Bronson is a doctor for the U. S. Air Force. When he joined the military, he was forced to leave his wife, Bethany, and two daughters on Okinawa Island, Japan. First he went to the United States for three months for training. Then, after only one short month with his family, it was time to leave again. This time the soldier went to Afghanistan, where he served for six months.
The time away was hard on the family, but they did their best to keep up their spirits in his absence. When Hyrum realized he would soon be able to return home to them, he planned a spectacular surprise.
Hyrum coordinated his return date with a friend, who helped make the whole thing happen. To make the moment even more dramatic, he left his wife with the impression that he would not return home for three more weeks.
Hyrum’s friend went with Bethany and her children to the beach. As they played and relaxed in the water, the friend pulled out a video camera. “Charity,” he said to one of the girls, “I’m going to send a video to your daddy. What would you say if he was here today?”
The question was a clever one. Charity had no way of knowing that her dad actually was there! “Tell him that I love him, and that I will love him for always,” the little girl replied. As she went back to her swimming, each of the family members shared that they loved and missed their soldier.
Then came the surprise. As Bethany splashed in the water with her youngest, a scuba diver emerged from the water right behind them. Bethany didn’t even notice as he stood up in the water behind her! Slowly, Hyrum pulled off his mask to reveal his face.
Suddenly, his wife was in shock. After a great gasp, she exclaimed, “Are you freaking kidding me?!” She was so thrilled to see him she could hardly move.
“Mrs. Bronson, your husband’s here reporting for duty,” Hyrum said through a wide smile. He gave her a big hug while his children screamed “Daddy! Daddy!” in their most excited voices.
This homecoming moment was truly a special one for the Bronson family. It is never easy to be away from a loved one, but time apart makes the reunion that much sweeter. This is one day the Bronsons will never forget.
