Some of us have taken the love for dance to the next level. Take for instance, sisters Kaylee and Lauren Thomas. Their passion for moving their bodies has introduced them to a unique dancing style called clogging. No we didn’t stutter, you heard that correctly. Clogging!

Clogging became a sensational American dance with roots going back to folk dances of the British Isles, Africa, and pre-Columbian America. The settlers in the American South then took note of the peculiar style of dancing and adopted it as their own. Soon their style came to be known as Appalachian clog dancing.

The 1930s came along and more progressive contemporary dance steps were added to the mix to create enrich the style. The percussive footwork style is vital to the essence of clogging.

Many names were synonymous with clogging back in the day including: buck dance, buck and wing, flatfooting, jigging, hoedowning, and sure-footing. Its history is vast and many questions are still postulated even today.

Strong modernizing trends began influencing Clogging even further. In the late 1980’s, Gregory Hines brought tap as a popular form of dancing. Many percussive dancers looked onto Hine’s influence and began incorporating many throwing pullbacks and wings in the steps.

Although they appear to be similar, clogging and tap dancing have their distinctive differences.

Cloggers wear a “buck tap” to emulate a metallic sound during toe tips and do a “split” as a type of tap. Tappers usually dance to a jazzy rhythm, while Cloggers dance to a straight rhythm, typically like a march or two-step.
