Shelter dog hugs friend tightly just before they were scheduled to be euthanized

There are a lot of cats and dogs in the world. It’s tough for shelters to keep a lot of animals in house with their limited funding. It means mouths to feed, pups to give love to and space taken up.

Angels Among Us Pet Rescue exists to save animals from shelters with high kill rates! They care for the animals and try and get them adopted. But even they have their limitations.

Pets still need to be adopted within a specific window or they have to be put down.

This breaks the hearts of the staff there, who are all animal lovers, but it has to be done or they wouldn’t be able to run their shelter properly.

Two dogs were nearing their adoption deadline, Kala and Keira. Hours away in fact.

In a last ditch effort to save these adorable pups,

Angels Among Us posted a plea for help on their Facebook page

along with a photo of Kala giving Keira a comforting hug.

“I’m Kala. This is Keira. We’re so scared in here. The people working in the shelters see how scared we are but just told each other that today is our deadline. We have to have someone rescue us or we’ll be “next.”

“Keira is black and not a “real boxer,” just a mix. She’s so brave and tells me it will be okay no matter what happens. She tells me to be brave too but I don’t know if I can be. Can you see our faces. Keira knows what will happen. You can see it in her eyes. She’s putting on a brave face for sure but I can feel her heart beating fast while I’m clinging to her.

“If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I’ll see her as she goes down the hallway. She won’t come back and I’ll cry. They’ll come for me next and I won’t be as brave. We’ve comforted each other while we were here. She gave me hope when I had none. Now it’s over. Unless…”

But then something amazing happened.

The plea for help reached the hearts of thousands and within just 2 hours and 6 minutes, someone volunteered to adopt both Kala and Kiera and keep them within the same home!

The picture was too adorable and the plea too heartfelt for the internet NOT to take action!

But let us not forget that a lot of other dogs unfortunately don’t see this kind of treatment.

Dogs and cats often end up staying in shelters for the rest of their lives because of trivial issues like not being cute enough, being too old, or being the wrong breed.

You can do your part in helping these animals out by adopting or fostering them! They are so deserving of love!

You can also donate and volunteer if you already have too many furry heads in your house! There are plenty of options if you want to help!

And while animal charities like this one are worthy of your time and effort, it doesn’t mean that you should boycott “kill” shelters! Shelters with high kill rates for their animals are often state funded and wildly under-funded.

You aren’t supporting some evil organisation by supporting a “kill” shelter, you’re actually helping make sure that they don’t kill even more animals. Especially if you adopt from them!

Kala and Keira did however find their ways into a really loving home, and that much is evident from their picture below with their new owner!

Who wouldn’t want a puppy that hugs other dogs!? Especially dogs that cute!

Respect to the new owner, thanks for saving such good pups!

Knowing where to get a dog or cat isn’t easy and the whole pet owner landscape is littered with politics.

But there isn’t much doubt that saving a shelter animal is preferable to buying from a dog breeder!
