Is there anything a mama won’t do for her kids? Even mama dogs won’t stop until they know their pups are safe and healthy. Despite the “annoyances” of motherhood, one mama dog went to the craziest lengths to make sure she never lost her pups.
When one dog took on the motherly mantle for a night, the result was something incredible.
Dogs can be scary smart sometimes. The ability to read human emotion and work alongside us is a testament to how long humans and dogs have been partners! Their persistence and devotion are what makes them such good companions for us. As it turns out from one story, it’s also what makes them incredible mothers!
Maggie, an Australian shepherd mix, was in her kennel one day when she heard some puppies nearby who were whining.
From the way the pups were crying, Maggie knew they were scared and confused. Since they were in a boarding home, they were surrounded by strange sights and smells and were just looking for help while they waited to be adopted. For a puppy, a place as loud and scary as a boarding house is more than enough reason to spend some time crying.
Incredibly, when Maggie heard the puppies, she decided to break out and comfort them! The moment was even captured on video.
Once she broke out of her kennel, she walked around looking for the location of the crying puppies. What might have led her to do this? Well, further research into the story seems to shed some light on it.
On Barkers Facebook, they explained that Maggie recently had puppies of her own.

“Maggie was recently adopted from the Edmonton Humane Society and had her own puppies who had been weaned and taken away from her around 2 weeks ago. She was boarding with Barker’s for a few days while her new parents were away.”
Sandy, the owner of Barkers, saw it all happen on video.
When Sandy made it back to the rescue, she found Maggie laying at the gate, licking the bars. The poor dog just wanted to help and Sandy knew what she needed to do.
Sandy decided to let them be a little family! Opening the gate, she allowed Maggie in the kennel to be with the puppies she loved so much.
With some cute licking and nuzzling, Maggie and the pups were as happy as could be. The foster mom spent a night with the pups she wanted to be with and the pups were comforted.
They think they have a pretty special dog on their hands,” said Sandy of Maggie’s parents when they learned what she had done.
When Maggie left to go home, the shelter owners started taking the pups home at night!
Maggie’s actions seemed to inspire something in the humans, too. The workers started taking the pups home at night and ended up getting adopted permanently! From scared pups to confident adoptees, all thanks to Maggie.
