It’s quite incredible the strength of the bonds that dogs share with their owners. If one ever happens to get separated from their beloved human, it pretty much completely breaks their heart, which is exactly what happened to a small Chihuahua mixed-breed named Scooter from Quincy, Michigan.
Sadly, Scooter’s owner passed away, leaving the poor dog all alone with no one to take care of him.
He had to be dropped off at the Humane Society of Branch County, but being a senior dog himself, the odds of Scooter finding a new home were very slim. Most families typically go for the puppies and it is very rare that people adopt older dogs.
That didn’t stop the Humane Society from doing their best to find him a home though.
They decided to reach out to their audience on Facebook asking for help.
“just went back to say goodnight and lockup. This is Scooter. He tucks himself in at night. I pray someone adopts this boy soon…” the post reads.
Included in the post was a picture of Scooter laying on a small bed underneath a blanket, just trying to get some rest.
The sadness in Scooter’s eyes is extremely evident in the photo and it’s clear that he misses his owner dearly. It is such a powerful image and much to the Humane Society’s surprise, thousands of other people felt the post was worth sharing too. It immediately started going viral.
It was such an incredible turn of events, and literally, overnight, the inquiries about Scooter began flooding in.
However, one woman was affected by Scooter’s story more than the others. Her name was Jessica Howard.
“It really brought me to tears as I looked at Jan’s post of Scooter and just really hit home to me, that that picture represented all the millions of animals awaiting homes in shelters everywhere,” Howard told Liftable.
“That Scooter laying there on that cot was once someone’s beloved pet who had since passed away, he had a story and his life mattered.”
Jessica knew what she had to do.
Even though she lived over three hours away from the Humane Society, she immediately contacted them and set up a time to meet the old pup in person.
After she arrived, it was love at first sight. She decided right then and there to take Scooter home and adopt him into her family. Jessica also has two other Chihuahuas named Jax and Hank that she adopted from the Humane Society previously.
“Senior dogs are simply amazing. They remind me of our human elders,” Howard said. “They have lived a long life and come with wonderful stories to tell. They also deserve to be treated with respect, compassion, love and decency.”
The Humane Society posted an update to their Facebook page later on to let all of their friends and followers know about the beautiful news.

We are so happy that Jessica decided to show this senior dog love. It is so sad that Scooter lost his previous owner, but at least the story has a happy ending. Things could have gone so much worse for the poor dog, and it warms our heart that Scooter has a new loving family to call his own. He even has his own Instagram account now!
