Francis is a teenage boy who is colorblind, luckily for him, he’s got a great group of friends that have each other’s backs. This past summer, 30 of his closest friends got together to give him the birthday surprise of a lifetime.
When he came out of the school building they yelled “surprise,” his birthday was still weeks away, was this for him? He strolled up in his big winter coat, confused as to what was going on at first, then he saw the glasses!
“He knew what it was and he immediately broke down, and I was in tears, I could see everyone behind him was in tears, I was like okay.” Francis’s best friend told USA TODAY.
When he saw the box he knew exactly what they were, he immediately started to cry in disbelief
The glasses weren’t cheap, but all of his friends had pitched in their own money to get him the special gift before the leafs changed, so he could hopefully see the vivid colors.
Although the gift was amazing, it was also the fact that they all came together for him that touched Francis’s heart. They knew there was no guarantee, but they wanted to give him the chance he rightfully deserved.
“Not only did they give me the glasses which is a nice gift, but they all like banded together to do that for me, which was just pretty overwhelming,” Francis told USA TODAY.
The moment of truth was when Francis put on the glasses for the first time, would they work for the colorblind teenager?
As soon as Francis put on the EmChroma glasses tears started pouring down his face, this caused a chain reaction and the whole group cried tears of joy. The glasses work, looking at two balloons, he yells out “they’re not the same!”
He’s simply amazed by all the vibrant colors around him, for the first time ever, Francis sees what everyone else sees! A yellow leaf catches his attention right away, so he picks it and they begin to take him for a stroll on campus.

These friends really just wanted to give Francis the opportunity that most of take for granted every day, they had no clue how profound of a gift it would be.
“You don’t really think about the difference between red and green, and how like striking that is. He sees all of that as brown and he’s such a kind person and has a heart of gold, I just wanted to be able to share that with him.” Another friend said as she held back tears.
