Nature can be a beautiful thing, especially when you get an up-close and personal experience with it.
A group of beach-goers got quite the surprise one day when they were out soaking up the sun. It all took place on Cadboro Bay beach in Victoria, British Columbia.
Some people took notice of an interesting sight in the water. They began filming a creature that was swimming up towards the shore.
Much to their delight, it was a wild sea otter! The woman comments,
“That is so super random… Have you ever seen one?”
As people watched from the beach, the sea otter got closer and closer. There was one man, however, that was standing in the shallow water, and this is who the creature set his sights on.
But what was the otter going to do?
What happened next was not expected by anyone.
The otter swam right up to the man in the brown shorts and began playing around his legs. In return, the man placed his hand down to possibly pet it.
While watching, the other beach-goers couldn’t help but burst out laughing at the extraordinary scene taking place before them.
“That is the coolest thing. It’s like grabbing his leg. He’s like climbing up his leg.”
The best part happens when the camera person films with a closer view. The friendly sea otter circles and nuzzles the man just as if he’s a pet looking for a belly rub.
It’s the cutest thing ever.
According to The Dodo, “otters are the cats of the sea.” This doesn’t seem too surprising just watching this encounter.
But then it got a tiny bit questionable. A woman asks the guy, “Is he biting you?” And just like on cue, the otter goes in for a nibble making him shriek, “Oww.”
Fortunately, it didn’t get too serious though.
On the Otter-World website, they say:
“Most people find the Otter to be a friendly looking creature. They tend to leave humans alone so they aren’t a threat if you happen to come upon one. However, they can bite and they can fight with their tails so if you are provoking an attack then you have been warned.”
But as for this otter, maybe the man was a wild otter whisperer because it couldn’t get enough of snuggling up to him.
Apparently, otters are very social creatures with their own kind as well.
“The social structure of Otters is one that seems very complex from the outside looking in. Otters are extremely social and it isn’t uncommon to see them playing with each other in the water or on the shore.”
But as we know, all fun must come to an end at some point. Eventually, the otter decided to swim away (perhaps his mom had called him for dinner).
This certainly wasn’t something you see every day. No wonder the beach-goers were amazed by it all!
Since the video was posted on YouTube it’s been viewed more than four million times. It’s received comments like,
“The otter is trying to say, “Dude. Dude. You’re standing on my clam. Dude. Could you just- shift over– yeah. Thanks.”
