When someone is mean or rude to you, it can be easy to respond in kind. However, if you’ve ever tried to fight fire with fire before, you know that that generally doesn’t work. Instead, it only serves to enrage it. Because of this, most people are taught to turn the other cheek, which is what most celebrities do when trolls bash them on social media, or when bullies show up at press conferences for the sole purpose of shouting obscenities and making their hatred known. But not Sarah Silverman.

Sarah Silverman is known for her dark sense of humor and no-nonsense outlook on life, but apparently, there is much more to her than she lets on. When a bully trolled Silverman’s Twitter account, she didn’t get mad and say something snippy back, and she didn’t turn the other cheek, knowing that ignoring an issue doesn’t make it go away. Instead, she talked to him.

On December 28, Silverman engaged Trump supporters in a friendly conversation about their beliefs. She wanted to know, in a non-argumentative way, where they were coming from. Though she was met with aggression from a number of parties, it was user Jeremy Jamrozy who caught her attention. Jamrozy called Sarah the C-word for her attempt at understanding, but instead of fighting back, she responded by getting to know him and attempting to get to the root of Jeremy’s anger.

Jamrozy responded to Silverman’s attempt at an understanding with disdain.

Silverman could have ignored him, or she could have responded with something witty and demeaning, but she didn’t. Instead, she reached out to him.

Jeremy, however, believes he is incapable of love, and his reason for why will break your heart.

Instead of responding promptly with empty words of platitude, she mulls over his response and comes back later with some questions.

When he apologizes, she recognizes that his problems are much bigger than hers.

She ends the interaction by making a shoutout on Jamrozy’s behalf for backcare specialists in the San Antonio area.

The internet applauds Silverman’s attempts to understand this man’s anger, as they should.

In an day when it is so common to hear retaliation stories that end in murder and irreversible harm, Silverman sets a heartwarming example that hopefully others will follow. In addition to providing the rest of the world with endless entertainment, she’s using her celebrity for good and providing the world with much needed examples of compassion.

Way to go Silverman.
